Great Britain And Ireland Achieve Dominant Victory Over Continental Europe At 2025 Team Cup
Great Britain and Ireland secured a decisive win at the 2025 Team Cup, defeating Continental Europe 17-8 at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort. Led by Justin Rose, the team began with a strong seven-point advantage, needing only two more points to clinch victory before Sunday's singles matches.
Laurie Canter from England scored the first point of the afternoon by defeating Romain Langasque 5&4. Tommy Fleetwood then secured the winning point for Great Britain and Ireland, mirroring his performance at Marco Simone in 2023, by beating Matthieu Pavon 3&1. Fleetwood's triumph over Pavon ensured he remained unbeaten, winning all four of his matches during the event.

Despite Great Britain and Ireland's dominance, Continental Europe mounted a spirited comeback. Niklas Nørgaard defeated Matthew Jordan 3&2, while Antoine Rozer and Matteo Manassero each won their matches 1Up. Captain Francesco Molinari rallied from two down with seven holes remaining to earn half a point against Jordan Smith. Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard also staged an impressive comeback, overcoming a three-hole deficit with five to play to halve against Aaron Rai.
Justin Rose expressed his pride in leading the team: "Huge honour. Loved the challenge of it. Loved the experience of it, and the lads have made me look incredibly good at it. The way they played was first class." He praised his team's relentless approach and focus on individual pride throughout the competition.
Francesco Molinari acknowledged that his team faced challenges: "I think I probably could have done a slightly better job with the boys. They gave it all they had." He noted that their side had less experience in such events but commended their effort against a formidable Great Britain and Ireland team.
Molinari also mentioned setbacks like losing Nicolai Højgaard to illness and Thomas Bjørn being unwell throughout the week. Despite these hurdles, Julien stepped up last minute and delivered impressive performances. Molinari remains optimistic about future competitions.
The event showcased intense competition and sportsmanship between both teams. Although Great Britain and Ireland emerged victorious, Continental Europe's resilience was commendable. The tournament provided valuable experience for younger players who will aim to reclaim victory in two years.
