Grand Mosque Enhances Worshipper Experience With High-Tech Connectivity And AI
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) alongside the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC) recently announced a significant technological enhancement at the Grand Mosque, aimed at improving the experience for worshippers. This initiative, a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Finance, the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, and various national technology and digital companies, focuses on utilizing advanced infrastructure, AI applications, and an innovative neutral host model to serve its purpose.
The enhancement includes leveraging 5G capabilities and artificial intelligence to streamline crowd and vehicle management, enhance asset management, and introduce smart waste disposal systems. A notable feature of this upgrade is the introduction of virtual medical clinic services within the Grand Mosque premises. Furthermore, the project employs Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real-time monitoring of the Zamzam well's water level and production. As a result of network upgrades, particularly on the ground floor of the third Saudi expansion building, download speeds have surged to over 1 gigabit per second, tripling previous rates.

At the core of this technological advancement is the neutral host model. This model is instrumental in providing a sophisticated technical infrastructure that supports 5G, data, and AI technologies. It allows multiple mobile network operators such as STC, Mobily, and Zain to share the physical infrastructure within the Grand Mosque. This ensures that all visitors can access top-tier communication services seamlessly. The project's execution by the Advanced Communications & Electronic Systems Company (ACES) underscores a collective ambition to realize the objectives set forth in Saudi Vision 2030.
Eng. Bassam Al-Bassam, Deputy Minister for Telecom and Infrastructure at MCIT, expressed pride in contributing to enhancing the Grand Mosque's visitor experience through state-of-the-art technologies. "There is nothing more honorable than serving visitors of the Grand Mosque. We are continuously working with our partners to provide the latest technologies and improve the visitor experience," he stated.
Eng. Saleh Al-Rasheed, CEO of RCMC, also emphasized the project's role in elevating digital infrastructure within the Grand Mosque and enhancing communication services for all visitors. This technological upgrade demonstrates a steadfast commitment to employing sophisticated solutions to create a more efficient and connected environment for millions of worshippers annually.
This initiative not only marks a significant step towards modernizing one of the most sacred sites in Islam but also aligns with broader efforts under Saudi Vision 2030 to enhance public services through digital transformation. The collaboration between government entities and technology companies in this project highlights a unified approach towards improving infrastructure and services for religious tourism in Saudi Arabia.
