Grand Mosque Imam Honors Winners Of Holy Quran Competition In South Africa

The South African National Quran Council concluded the 14th National Quran Memorization Competition 2024 on Saturday at Nurul Islam Masjid in Lenasia, Gauteng province. The event was graced by Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque Yasser bin Rashid Al-Dosari, who is visiting South Africa as part of a program organized by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance.

Al-Dosari highlighted in his speech that the Quran serves as the constitution for Muslims, providing guidance and pride. He described it as a guiding light that leads people from darkness to light, revealing clear truths. The Quran encompasses laws, judgments, admonitions, parables, stories, and news, explaining both the universe's system and life's concept.

During his address, Al-Dosari emphasized Saudi Arabia's dedication to the Holy Quran and its reciters. He noted that since the Kingdom’s establishment by King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud—may God have mercy on him—there has been significant support for Quran memorization, recitation, interpretation, and teaching. This commitment continues under King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH the Crown Prince.

The competition saw around 400 male and female participants showcasing their memorization skills. Out of these, 22 male contestants and 13 female contestants advanced to higher levels. They demonstrated mastery over various portions of the Quran, including the entire Quran (30 Juz’), half of it (15 Juz’), and 5 Juz’. Ultimately, nine male contestants and seven female contestants emerged victorious.

The winners received prizes totaling 200,000 Saudi Riyals. The event also saw attendance from Muhammad bin Abdul Salam Ashour, Religious Attaché of the Saudi Embassy in South Africa; Sheikh Qari Basheer Patel, Head of the South African National Quran Council; along with several Islamic figures and association leaders in South Africa.

Al-Dosari expressed gratitude towards Saudi leadership for their efforts in supporting Islam and Muslims globally. He thanked the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for ensuring the success of these visits through dedicated resource utilization.

In his remarks, Ashour mentioned that this competition started in 2001 with support from many Saudi ambassadors. He reiterated Saudi Arabia's commitment to promoting care for the Holy Quran.

The ceremony underscored Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to foster a deep connection with the Holy Quran among Muslims worldwide. This dedication reflects in their continuous support for such competitions that encourage memorization and recitation excellence.
