Advanced Air Purification System Ensures Clean Breathing At Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque of Makkah stands as a beacon of spiritual solace and architectural marvel, now further enhanced by an advanced air cooling and purification system ensuring the air breathed by its visitors is clean and free from microorganisms. This sophisticated system, managed by the Technical, Operational and Maintenance Agency at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, undergoes a rigorous purification process nine times daily, incorporating ultraviolet technology for sanitization.

Strategically placed specialized air conditioning units within the Grand Mosque provide a constant flow of chilled air, effectively eliminating germs and ensuring a comfortable environment for worshippers. The system boasts a remarkable cooling capacity of 155,000 tons, making it one of the largest in the world. This is achieved through two colossal cooling stations, Ajyad and Shamiya, which are the largest globally, located 500 meters and 900 meters from the Grand Mosque respectively. Shamiya station delivers 120,000 tons of cooling power while Ajyad contributes 35,000 tons.

Clean Air at Grand Mosque

The process begins with chilling water to a temperature of 4 to 5 degrees Celsius at these stations. The water then travels through an extensive network of pipes to the Grand Mosque, where it undergoes heat exchange in mechanical air handling units before being released as purified and cooled air throughout the mosque. These units have recently been upgraded, including the replacement of heat exchangers and air filters to ensure continuous air purification.

Air purification involves a multi-phase journey starting with natural air being drawn into highly efficient filters that block dust particles and contaminants. Following this initial filtration, the air is sanitized with ultraviolet rays to eliminate harmful microorganisms or viruses before reaching prayer areas.

A dedicated team of skilled Saudi engineers and technicians oversees this intricate system. They are responsible for monitoring temperature levels, maintaining optimal humidity, and ensuring the system's seamless operation around the clock. Their expertise allows them to adjust airflow based on visitor density, achieving thermal comfort tailored to worshippers' needs while maintaining energy efficiency. This team also manages maintenance orders with strict adherence to technical guidelines and safety protocols.

This advanced air cooling and purification system underscores the commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for worshippers at the Grand Mosque of Makkah. Through meticulous planning and state-of-the-art technology, it ensures that every breath taken within its sacred confines is as pure as the spiritual experience it offers.
