Global Research Council Governing Board Convenes Regular Meeting In Riyadh To Discuss Key Research Issues

The Global Research Council (GRC) convened its regular meeting on Monday, coinciding with the council's 13th Annual Meeting. Hosted in Riyadh by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDIA), the event was organized in collaboration with Türkiye's Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK). Dr. Munir Eldesouki, President of KACST and Vice Chair of the GRC, represented the Kingdom and the MENA region.

During the meeting, discussions centred on the council’s adaptable governance model. Dr. Alejandro Adem, President of Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, was re-elected as chair for another two years. Dr. Mari Teveth, Chief Executive of Norway's Research Council, was also elected as vice chair for the same duration. These leadership roles are crucial for steering future initiatives.

Global Research Council Meets in Riyadh

A key theme was artificial intelligence (AI) and its expanding role in research. Presentations highlighted AI's real-world applications in speeding up discoveries while addressing ethical concerns. Participants examined new funding models for open access and knowledge sharing, stressing modern evaluation systems that value societal impact over traditional metrics.

Saudi Arabia introduced an initiative called the "Global Responsible Research and Innovation Index". This aims to establish unified standards that are socially and economically conscious for assessing research impact. The initiative seeks to foster equity by bridging technological gaps between developed and developing nations.

Sustainable research amid multilateral collaboration was another focus area. Discussions explored balancing intellectual property protection with open knowledge sharing for public benefit. Diverse regional perspectives on open science practices were shared, emphasizing international cooperation.

The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology showcased a digital platform using natural language processing to measure research impact beyond academia. This tool highlights how emerging technologies can enhance understanding of research contributions globally.

Equity in Resource Distribution

Experts deliberated on reimagining the global research ecosystem to promote greater equity and inclusion. Emphasis was placed on fair resource distribution across regions to bridge technological divides. This approach aims to ensure all countries benefit from scientific advancements.

In-depth discussions focused on responsible research assessment frameworks aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The shift from traditional benchmarks to models prioritizing tangible contributions to global challenges reflects a growing trend towards impactful science.

Emerging AI tools were showcased for analysing scientific literature and identifying underutilized funding opportunities. These tools aim to boost international collaboration by making it easier to find resources that support joint projects across borders.

The meeting underscored the importance of evolving research practices in line with societal needs. By prioritising equity, sustainability, and innovation, these discussions aim to shape a more inclusive future for global scientific endeavours.
