State-of-the-Art Facility at GMU Aims to Improve Skills of Future Healthcare Professionals In The UAE

The Gulf Medical University (GMU) celebrated the inauguration of the Thumbay Institute of Clinical Simulation on its Ajman campus. This state-of-the-art facility is aimed at enhancing the skills of students, residents, and practicing clinicians through simulated real-life care scenarios.

The event, which started at 10:00 AM, was attended by academic leaders, faculty, and healthcare partners, marking a significant milestone in healthcare education within the region.

GMU Opens Thumbay Institute for Clinical Simulation

The institute is designed to offer an immersive learning experience, utilizing advanced manikins, task trainers, and simulated environments, including wards and operating theatres.

It focuses on team-based drills, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), crisis management, and various medical and allied health procedures. This hands-on approach is geared towards making critical response and interdisciplinary teamwork second nature to learners.

GMU, in collaboration with the Thumbay academic health system, is establishing the UAE's most extensive integrated network of healthcare simulation centers.

This network, comprising both current and upcoming facilities, is set to revolutionize skills training in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, surgery, and veterinary medicine.

The initiative will not only streamline training across different healthcare disciplines but also enhance patient safety throughout the region.

According to Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, the institute exemplifies GMU's commitment to setting a national benchmark in hands-on health professions education.

This endeavor is expected to produce more competent graduates, facilitate quicker integration of interns and residents, promote stronger teamwork across disciplines, and ultimately ensure safer patient care.

The institute's simulation suites are meticulously designed to mimic real healthcare settings, including ICUs, emergency rooms, and primary care facilities.

Each training session is recorded, allowing for detailed debriefs where participants can review and refine their performance.

The curriculum is broad, covering not just clinical skills but also communication, ethics, cultural competence, and leadership under pressure.

The Thumbay Institute of Clinical Simulation boasts affiliations and accreditations with prestigious organizations such as the American Heart Association, the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine.

These partnerships are instrumental in providing certification courses and fostering continuous professional development for clinicians within the Thumbay healthcare network and beyond.

This initiative not only enhances the university's healthcare education framework from the classroom to clinical and community care but also paves the way for future collaborative research in human factors, AI-assisted training, and patient safety outcomes.

It signifies a new era in healthcare education, focusing on both human and animal health, and sets a new standard for medical training in the UAE and the wider region.
