Global Women's Forum Highlights Importance Of Women Of Determination In The Workplace

Anna Kaminski, a Neurodiversity Specialist Consultant at The Butterfly and CEO of NeuroKinds, led an insightful session at the Global Women's Forum Dubai 2024. Her talk, "Transforming Challenges into Achievements: Women of Determination in the Workplace," focused on the unique strengths of women and the systemic changes needed for inclusive workplaces.

Kaminski began by presenting compelling statistics, noting that 15% of the global population lives with a disability, with 80% being invisible. She explained that disabilities cover a wide range, including physical, sensory, medical, intellectual, psychological, and neurodevelopmental conditions. Most of these conditions are acquired during a person's life.

Empowering Women of Determination at Work

"Despite these numbers, biases and stereotypes persist," Kaminski said. "Women of Determination are often overlooked for leadership roles and confined to entry-level positions because of the assumption that they need extensive help or cannot excel." She stressed that inclusivity often requires simple accommodations like ramps for wheelchair access or standing desks for employees with ADHD.

Kaminski highlighted that creating equity involves addressing needs to ensure fair treatment and opportunities. She emphasised that company leaders must model inclusive behaviour to foster an accessible environment. According to her, more women than men have disabilities; the UN reports 1 in 5 women compared to 1 in 8 men.

She also discussed broader challenges faced by women of determination, such as societal biases and limited accessibility. In many cultures where men are expected to be breadwinners, girls are often seen as less capable than boys. This belief limits their opportunities and contributes to systemic gender and disability discrimination.

Women of Determination face higher rates of depression and anxiety due to exclusion and stigma. Kaminski underscored the importance of changing perceptions and creating environments where differences are celebrated. She urged organisations to implement robust policies and provide tailored accommodations while holding leadership accountable for fostering equity.

The Benefits of Inclusion

"Equity isn't just about fairness," she explained. "It's about creating conditions where everyone can thrive." Kaminski highlighted the tangible benefits of inclusion, noting that people of determination bring unique perspectives that drive intellectual diversity. By incorporating these perspectives, businesses can foster innovation, strengthen communities, and increase shareholder value.

"Women of determination are not just participants in the workplace; they are leaders who bring resilience and a wealth of experience to the table," she said. Kaminski concluded with a call for collective action: "Building inclusive workplaces isn't just about policies; it's about cultural change."

"When you see women of determination excelling as professionals, mothers, and community members," she stated, "you realise the power of inclusion." By fostering an environment where everyone belongs, we empower individuals and strengthen society.
