Global Water Organization Set To Lead International Efforts Against Growing Water Challenges

Senior officials and water leaders from eight countries convened in Riyadh to tackle global water challenges. They discussed integrated water management goals and the anticipated role of the Global Water Organization (GWO). This meeting coincided with the official signing of GWO’s charter and the launch of its operations, involving representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Spain, Greece, Senegal, Pakistan, and Mauritania.

At the event's outset, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley stressed the urgent need to address pressing water issues like scarcity and pollution. He highlighted that GWO offers a strategic opportunity for enhanced cooperation and knowledge-sharing among member states. Alfadley also emphasized rethinking water project designs and promoting innovation-driven research for sustainable solutions.

Global Water Organization Tackles Water Issues

Kuwaiti Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Dr. Subaih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem expressed optimism about GWO's potential to strengthen collaboration. He noted that it could serve as a reference point for global water policy. Al-Mukhaizeem hoped that the organization would evolve to meet the growing needs of the water sector.

Senegalese Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Dièye described GWO as more than just a platform. He called it a diplomatic force to foster global cooperation and promote equitable water distribution. Dièye urged the organization to increase its presence in Africa, where water scarcity is expected to worsen by 2050.

Mauritanian Minister of Water and Sanitation Amal Bint Mouloud remarked on the timely launch of GWO’s operations. She noted it reflects a shared understanding of collective water governance's importance. Bint Mouloud proposed developing a rapid-response mechanism for global water emergencies.

Pakistani Federal Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Mueen Wattoo stated that signing the organization’s charter positions it to lead global efforts in addressing water challenges. He emphasized improved coordination, equitable access — especially in developing nations — and sustainable economic development as key objectives.

European Expertise in Water Management

Greek Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Alexis Konstantopoulos confirmed Greece’s readiness to contribute its European expertise in water management to support GWO’s mission. Spanish Chargé d’Affaires in Saudi Arabia Ana Elvira emphasized the value of global collaboration and knowledge exchange for efficient water resource management.

Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali Al-Misnad said GWO’s launch marks a strategic milestone for peacebuilding and global solidarity. She affirmed that it would provide a platform for advancing collective water priorities.

The discussions underscored the importance of diversified financing mechanisms with stronger private sector engagement. Overreliance on public funding often delays project implementation. The gathering highlighted how GWO could become a hub for innovation and best practices globally.
