The UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia UAE), operating under the prestigious Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has recently made an announcement that is set to stir further interest among global innovators and researchers. In response to the overwhelming interest it has garnered, Suqia UAE has decided to extend the application deadline for the 4th cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award. With a generous prize pool of US$1 million, the award seeks to unearth sustainable and innovative solutions aimed at combating the pressing issue of water scarcity across the globe.
Entities including companies, research and development centres, research institutes, as well as individual innovators and youth from around the world, are now given until the end of May 2024 to submit their applications. The award is focused on encouraging the development of pioneering projects, technologies, and prototypes in the areas of water desalination and purification, leveraging renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, osmotic power, and geothermal technologies.

This initiative mirrors the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, aiming to tackle the challenges posed by water scarcity. It strives to discover sustainable solutions that guarantee access to fresh water for impoverished and afflicted communities worldwide, particularly those most affected. This endeavor aligns with Goal 6 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
The award has evolved into a global platform that attracts institutions, research centres, and innovators dedicated to developing practical and sustainable solutions to the global water crisis through renewable energy. Over its past three cycles, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award has celebrated 31 winners from 22 different countries. The award encompasses four main categories: the Innovative Projects Award (subdivided into Large Projects Award and Small Projects Award), the Innovative Research and Development Award (including National Institutions Award and International Institutions Award), the Innovative Individual Award (comprising Distinguished Research Award and Youth Award), and lastly, the Innovative Crisis Solutions Award.
Interested parties who have developed innovative technologies addressing water scarcity challenges are encouraged to register for the award by 31st May at https://www.suqia.ae/.
