Global Summit Of Religious Leaders For Climate Launches In Baku With Over 300 Attendees
The Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate began in Baku, supported by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan. Organised by the Caucasus Muslims’ Board and the Muslim Council of Elders, along with other international bodies, the summit is themed "Global Religions for a Green Planet." Over 300 leaders from various sectors worldwide attended to discuss climate action.
During the opening session, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, highlighted that religious teachings inherently support climate action. He stated that religions promote mercy, responsibility, and justice towards Earth and future generations. Abdelsalam emphasised that religious texts encourage respect for nature and balance with life.

Abdelsalam noted a historic opportunity to transform religions into active forces against climate change. He mentioned past efforts by religious leaders addressing global challenges through interfaith dialogue. Initiatives like the Document on Human Fraternity and the Abrahamic Family House exemplify how such dialogues can inspire solutions to current issues.
The summit's location in Azerbaijan underscores a unified call from religious leaders to COP29 and global policymakers. Abdelsalam urged for decisive actions against climate risks. He advocated for a global movement where everyone becomes a protector of Earth, stressing the integration of science and faith as crucial for effective climate action.
The Muslim Council of Elders supports unifying religious voices to tackle climate challenges. The council has formed an alliance with over 70 institutions representing diverse faiths globally. Last year, it organised the Global Faith Summit on Climate Action in Abu Dhabi, culminating in "The Call of Conscience" statement signed by 30 prominent religious figures.
The council also introduced the Faith Pavilion at COP28, marking a first in conference history. It showcased initiatives like the "Islamic Vision for Achieving Environmental Sustainability," highlighting global responsibilities towards environmental protection. These efforts aim to strengthen religions' roles in addressing climate issues.
The summit aims to mobilise efforts encouraging politicians and decision-makers to take firm actions against climate change threats. By enhancing collaboration between spiritual beliefs and environmental knowledge, it seeks to make climate action an essential priority for safeguarding our planet's future.
