Global SDG Leadership Delegation Reviews Key Sustainability Projects At DEWA In Dubai
The Sustainability and Innovation Centre of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently hosted a distinguished group of 30 leaders from 15 nations. This visit was part of the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Leadership Programme. The initiative, launched by the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs and the Government Experience Exchange Programme, is managed by the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs in partnership with the SDG Academy.
During their visit, DEWA officials shared insights into significant projects aimed at energy transition and carbon reduction. Among these is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which stands as the largest single-site solar facility globally under the independent power producer model. By 2030, its capacity is projected to exceed 8,000 megawatts, significantly reducing carbon emissions by approximately 8.5 million tonnes annually.
The delegation also learned about DEWA’s pioneering Green Hydrogen project. This initiative marks the first in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar energy. The hydrogen generated is utilised to create clean energy through a hydrogen-powered engine, contributing to reduced carbon emissions. It supports various sectors, including powering hydrogen vehicles.
Additionally, visitors were informed about the EV Green Charger initiative. This programme offers smart charging services through over 1,500 charging points across Dubai, promoting sustainable transportation solutions within the city.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, highlighted that this visit underscores DEWA’s commitment to supporting both global and national efforts towards achieving the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasised Dubai's role as a centre for knowledge exchange in sustainable development.
Al Tayer stated that since their inception in 2015, DEWA has been actively supporting the SDGs. The authority contributes to goals related to clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, economic growth, innovation, responsible consumption and climate action.
Acknowledgement of Efforts
These contributions were acknowledged when DEWA received the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) UN SDGs Challenge Award in 2021. This recognition highlights DEWA's dedication to advancing sustainable practices and its significant role in promoting environmental responsibility.
The visit by international leaders reflects DEWA's influence in fostering global cooperation towards sustainability goals. By sharing knowledge and showcasing innovative projects like the solar park and green hydrogen initiatives, DEWA continues to lead efforts in reducing carbon footprints while enhancing renewable energy capabilities.
