Global Partnership Initiative Launched To Enhance Early Warning Systems For Sand And Dust Storms

Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, CEO of the National Center for Meteorology, introduced a new initiative to enhance early warning systems for sand and dust storms. This announcement took place at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh. The initiative seeks to improve global forecasting capabilities and mitigate impacts through collaboration among regional centers.

The initiative involves cooperation between four regional centers linked with the World Meteorological Organization: Jeddah, Barcelona, Beijing, and Pan-America in Barbados. Dr. Ghulam highlighted that over 330 million people are affected by these storms each year, including 14% of children globally. The goal is to save lives and protect livelihoods by enhancing data exchange and supporting scientific research.

Saudi Arabia has pledged $10 million over five years to support this initiative. This commitment reflects the Kingdom's dedication to tackling environmental challenges under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader environmental efforts like the Saudi Green Initiative.

Dr. Ghulam emphasized that international cooperation is essential for achieving these goals. He urged countries, UN organizations, research institutions, and private sectors to join this global partnership. Addressing dust and sand storms requires collective action for a sustainable future.

The initiative aims to address health, economic, and environmental damages caused by dust and sand storms. By fostering collaboration among regional centers, it seeks to enhance resilience through improved early warning systems. Dr. Ghulam stressed that joint efforts are crucial for creating a healthier future for coming generations.
