Global Media Congress 2024 Highlights Importance Of Diversity In Media Production

The Global Media Congress 2024 concluded its second day with a session titled "The Imperative of Diversity in Media Production." Moderated by Deniz Kilislioğlu, the discussion featured Yi-Hwa, Jose Jimenez Fuentes, and Viory Kevin Y. Brown. Kilislioğlu noted that with over 8 billion people globally, media representation is crucial for reflecting diverse human experiences and fostering empathy.

Yi-Hwa Hanna shared her experiences from a career that began in a homogenous environment. She stressed that diversity in media goes beyond race to include age, experience, and perspectives. According to Hanna, teams with varied backgrounds can better connect emotionally with audiences and produce genuine content. She also acknowledged social media's role in amplifying underrepresented voices, making diversity more visible today.

Jose Jimenez Fuentes discussed the linguistic and cultural challenges of operating in a global media landscape. His organisation works in over 150 languages, underscoring diversity as foundational rather than merely a priority. Fuentes explained how partnering with local journalists ensures authenticity and empowers communities to narrate their own stories. He emphasised that diversity strengthens media production by giving voice to underrepresented groups, especially in the Global South.

Viory Kevin Y. Brown highlighted how diversity drives creativity and progress. Coming from a non-media background, he stressed the importance of harmonising differences by focusing on common goals instead of divisions. Brown defined inclusion as fostering a sense of belonging where individuals feel valued for their unique traits. He noted that innovation often arises from diverse perspectives and differing opinions, paving the way for new opportunities.

The session underscored the need for media organisations to prioritise authentic storytelling that resonates globally. By ensuring diverse voices are heard and celebrated, these organisations can create content that truly reflects the world's varied experiences.
