World Calls for Legal Framework to Shield Against Future Pandemics, Says IPU SG
Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), highlighted the significant role of the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 in Dubai, emphasizing its contribution to global development and prosperity. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the event's second day, Chungong pointed out the summit's effectiveness in gathering leaders and decision-makers worldwide to share insights and strategies addressing pressing global challenges.
According to Chungong, the current global landscape is fraught with issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence impacts, and geopolitical tensions. He believes that the WGS plays a crucial role in uniting efforts towards finding solutions to these challenges. The focus on climate change and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals were highlighted as key areas of discussion at the summit.

The diversity of topics and participants at the WGS was noted as a strength, contributing to actionable and logical outcomes. On UAE's relationship with the IPU, he described it as very positive, highlighting the Federal National Council's active role within the Union since signing a cooperation agreement in 2014.
The Secretary-General praised the UAE Federal National Council for its contributions to IPU's work through valuable proposals and initiatives. This engagement has notably enhanced UAE's standing as a leader in humanitarian efforts globally. He also referenced an agreement between the Federal National Council and IPU to host a Parliamentary Conference of the World Trade Organisation, marking a significant partnership milestone.
