Pioneering Global Industrial Safety Manifesto Unveiled To Enhance Worker Protection

The Global Initiative for Industrial Safety (GIFIS) has introduced a groundbreaking Manifesto for Global Industrial Safety. This initiative aims to enhance global safety through the adoption of advanced technologies. Developed with partners like the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Lloyd’s Register Foundation, the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), and Cambridge Industrial Innovation Policy (CIIP), this manifesto addresses both new and existing safety risks impacting workers worldwide.

Advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Advanced Robotics are becoming essential in industrial processes. These innovations lead to intelligent factories and dynamic supply chains. The Manifesto outlines five guiding principles that require contributions from industry, government, academia, regulators, and international organisations. These principles aim to accelerate the safe adoption of technology in new industrial processes and integrate technology-enabled safety solutions into traditional industries.

Global Safety Manifesto Launched

David Reid, Director of Global Advocacy and Partnership Campaigns at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, highlighted the dual nature of emerging technologies. He stated, "Emerging technologies, such as big data, cloud computing, robotics, and 3D printing, are rapidly changing the industrial landscape. While they bring significant opportunities, they also pose new risks to the safety of workers, especially in the developing world. The GIFIS Manifesto serves as a beacon to ensure new technologies are adopted safely across industrial processes."

Ciyong Zou from UNIDO emphasised the importance of a unified approach to tackle complex safety challenges. He said, "The GIFIS Manifesto for Global Industrial Safety provides a unified approach to address complex safety challenges, signifying a critical first step toward a safe and more secure industrial future. The industrial sector, governments, academia, regulators, and international organisations are encouraged to act upon industrial safety regulations that are very much needed for transformative and sustainable industrial development."

The Manifesto represents a significant milestone for GIFIS since its inception during the 2021 edition of GMIS. This high-profile event gathers global leaders to promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development.

Call to Action

Namir Hourani from GMIS described the Manifesto as a call to action against longstanding industrial safety issues through innovative collaboration. He noted that this effort will drive changes in industrial standards globally. "The Manifesto is a call to action to address longstanding industrial safety challenges through innovative and collaborative efforts," he said. "This will catalyse change in industrial standards and best practices across the world, ensuring that industries prioritise the safety and well-being of every single worker."

The launch of this manifesto marks an important step towards addressing both emerging and long-standing safety risks affecting workers globally. By promoting collaboration among various sectors and integrating advanced technologies safely into industrial processes, it aims to create safer working environments worldwide.
