Global Food Security Summit 2024 In Abu Dhabi Addresses Hunger And Sustainable Solutions
The Global Food Security Summit 2024 concluded its sessions, marking the end of Global Food Week. This event gathered 21 ministers and senior officials involved in global food security policymaking, alongside experts and scientists worldwide. Discussions centred on current challenges, future opportunities for enhancing food security, and developing sustainable systems to withstand future crises.
A significant issue highlighted was global hunger, affecting over 733 million people. This crisis threatens peace, stability, and human dignity. The Islamic Organisation for Food Security showcased governance and sustainability initiatives across its 41 member countries. They emphasised the importance of a dedicated Food Security Day for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The summit also focused on sustainable agri-food systems in Africa, particularly West Africa. Here, 73 percent of farming households have improved their resilience to climate shocks. Sustainability emerged as a cornerstone theme, with participants advocating efficient resource use, renewable energy in agriculture, and value-added food production.
Women's empowerment was another key focus. Enhancing women's roles in agriculture is crucial for economic growth and sustainability. The summit recognised their contributions to these areas.
Clean Energy Transition and Innovative Solutions
Despite challenges from greenhouse gas emissions, the summit called for clean energy solutions. A six-pillar framework was proposed, covering inclusivity, incentives, data, investments, institutions, and innovation. Investing in advanced agricultural technologies is essential to ensure reliable food supplies for future generations.
The summit stressed the need for enhanced cooperation along food value chains to address global crises effectively. It urged immediate international efforts to create a resilient global food system that ensures access to healthy food for all.
Spotlight on the UAE's Initiatives
The UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051 received praise for aligning with global goals. Initiatives like the "Nema" platform combat food waste and promote sustainable consumption practices. The UAE’s leadership at COP28 was acknowledged for advancing its vision of eliminating food waste and transforming traditional systems.
By hosting this inaugural summit, the UAE reaffirmed its commitment to building sustainable food systems. It set an example for collective action towards a future free of food waste.
