Global Energy Efficiency Alliance Launches First WGS Meeting To Accelerate Energy Efficiency

The Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) held its first official meeting during the World Government Summit 2026, chaired by Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei. Ministers, international organisations, private sector leaders, and financiers attended, signalling a coordinated push to scale up energy efficiency as a central climate and development solution over the coming decade.

Under GEEA’s Charter, member states agree to work towards doubling the global annual rate of energy efficiency improvement to more than 4 percent by 2030. This target supports international climate pledges, aims to cut emissions faster, and seeks to improve how resources are used across economies worldwide.

Al Mazrouei linked the Alliance’s objectives to the commitment announced at COP28 to double efficiency progress by 2030. He described that pledge as a decisive moment which pushed energy efficiency back to the centre of practical climate action because of its relatively quick impact and comparatively lower cost than many other options.

The Minister stressed that the key challenge is not a shortage of solutions but weak follow-through. According to Al Mazrouei, global energy efficiency improvement remains below 2 percent each year, even though staying on track for climate goals and net zero needs an annual rate above 4 percent.

The meeting also approved the broad outlines of GEEA’s strategy and statute. Participants discussed creating specialist committees and drafting detailed work plans. These plans aim to turn political pledges into concrete measures, align national and international policies, agree governance rules, and build systems for tracking results and sharing reliable data.

Delegates launched the Alliance’s digital platform, GEEA.AE, described as an interactive hub dedicated to energy efficiency cooperation. The artificial intelligence-enabled site is designed to connect governments, technology providers, financial institutions, the private sector, and academic partners, and to highlight policies, projects, and investment opportunities across participating countries.

The platform also offers space to showcase technologies and innovative solutions that members are already deploying. By making this information accessible in one place, GEEA.AE is intended to speed up knowledge exchange, encourage replication of successful projects, and link potential investors with viable efficiency initiatives across member states.

Al Mazrouei outlined the economic and social scale of current inefficiencies. "The global energy system wastes more than US$2 trillion every year due to inefficient energy use across buildings, industry, and the transport sector. These losses go far beyond the financial dimension, translating into lost productivity, avoidable emissions, and missed development opportunities. This underscores the importance of GEEA, which reflects the UAE’s approach of leading through implementation and collective action," Al Mazrouei said.

Al Mazrouei warned that if ambition and actual delivery remain out of step, countries will face higher long-term costs and rising emissions, with risks for energy security and economic stability. He also highlighted fairness concerns, noting that around 675 million people still lack electricity, while billions depend on expensive, inefficient systems that restrict development and affect everyday living standards.

Key figures and targets shared at the meeting are shown below.

The UAE’s domestic policies already place efficiency at the centre of planning. "The UAE has placed energy efficiency at the core of its national policies, achieving tangible results that include emissions reductions, energy savings, and enhanced economic returns. The launch of GEEA represents a continuation of this approach and a strategic effort to unify international action in this critical field," he added.

Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Vice President of GEEA, underlined the Alliance’s inclusive structure. "GEEA is the first international platform of its kind to bring together governments, the private sector, international organisations, financial institutions, and research and innovation centres under one umbrella. It provides a practical framework for sharing successful experiences, developing unified benchmarking tools, and delivering technical support to initiatives aimed at reducing energy waste, while transferring the UAE’s successful energy efficiency experience to countries around the world."

Al Olama described GEEA as an open initiative, encouraging countries, entities, and companies to participate in a coordinated effort that moves beyond planning towards concrete implementation. This approach aims to build an energy future that is accessible, efficient, fair, and sustainable, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a reliable international partner in shaping the sector’s direction.

The UAE originally announced the Alliance during a high-level roundtable at the World Governments Summit 2025, where officials and experts discussed its proposed framework. Later, at the 10th Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Brussels, Belgium, the UAE formally took on the GEEA presidency for three years, giving the country a central role in guiding the Alliance’s early work.
