Global Demand For Gaza Ceasefire Rises As Fears Of Large-Scale War Loom, Aboul Gheit Warns

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, stated that a ceasefire in Gaza is now a global demand, not just an Arab one. He warned of a potential large-scale war on the horizon. Speaking at the 162nd session of the Council of the Arab League, held at the General Secretariat's headquarters, he highlighted ongoing Israeli occupation lies about the Philadelphi axis.

Aboul Gheit criticised major global powers for their lack of pressure on Israel to stop its "brutality." He accused Israel of seeking revenge, ethnic cleansing, and displacement. He emphasised that Arab efforts will continue to expose these plans globally and support Palestinian resilience. "The occupation aims for revenge, the liquidation of the Palestinian cause, annexing lands, ethnic cleansing, and displacement," he said.

Global Call for Gaza Truce Amid War Fears

The Mauritanian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, urged the international community to pressure Israel to halt its aggression in Gaza. He also called for ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need there. His remarks were made during his speech at the opening session as President of the previous session of the Arab League Council.

Aboul Gheit also warned about a critical phase facing the Arab nation. He stressed that challenging crises require solidarity, cooperation, and joint action among Arab countries. He pointed out Sudan's worsening crisis due to floods and called for unity to support Sudan during this difficult time.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed concern over Israeli attempts to change Al-Aqsa Mosque's status quo or identity. He noted that collective punishment is prevalent in Gaza and has extended to the West Bank. Fidan called for greater unity among Islamic countries and United Nations member states.

Support from Turkey

Fidan also expressed Turkey's desire to enhance cooperation with the Arab world. He highlighted Turkey's aim to collaborate in regional stability and strengthen its partnership with the League of Arab States. "Turkey desires to enhance cooperation with the Arab world," he stated.

The Secretary-General reiterated Egypt's stance against re-imposing occupation on Gaza and seizing parts of it. This position is supported by other Arab nations. Aboul Gheit stressed that these efforts are crucial in confronting Israeli plans and supporting Palestinians.

The session underscored a unified call for international intervention to address Israeli actions in Gaza and support humanitarian efforts there.
