Vienna's UN Tower Adorned With Mural Reflecting On Peace's Delicate Nature

The UN building in Vienna has been transformed into a massive canvas by Australian artist Fintan Magee, highlighting the challenges of achieving peace in a conflict-prone world. This project supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the upcoming Summit of the Future.

Magee's artwork underscores the human aspects of the UN's role and the delicate nature of peace. "This work examines the human elements in the role of the UN and the fragility of peace. Lasting stability should never be taken for granted and will always require continued diplomacy and human intervention," Magee said. He emphasised, "Peace is always hard work."

The mural, covering nearly 1,000 square metres, took about three weeks to complete. It is now a vibrant piece on what was once a grey wall at the Vienna International Centre, home to the UN. The project aims to raise awareness about sustainable peace and the significance of public art.

The mural's official inauguration is set for Friday, where Magee will discuss its creation process, motif, and relevance to Vienna and its residents. The Sydney-based artist arrived in Austria on 10th June to start this significant project, which is part of the Calle Libre Art Festival, Central Europe's largest art festival.

Jakob Kattner, Director of Calle Libre Street Art Festival and Artistic Director of this project, highlighted its importance: "In today’s world, characterised by ongoing conflicts, refugees and migration, it is more important than ever to raise awareness of the need for a sustainable and peaceful future." He added that Vienna's status as an international art hub makes this work particularly impactful.

Supporting Global Goals

The mural symbolises the achievement of SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions. It also promotes September's Summit of the Future aimed at revitalising multilateralism to fulfil the UN Charter's promises. Ghada Waly, Director-General of the UN Office at Vienna, remarked on this milestone: "As we mark the 45th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre this year, we must seize this opportunity to re-invest in multilateralism and build momentum for the UN’s Summit of the Future taking place in September in New York."

Waly expressed hope that this artwork would inspire global efforts towards sustainability, understanding, and peace: "We hope this artwork will be a source of inspiration for promoting sustainability, understanding and peace around the world."

Magee hopes his mural serves as a reminder that "peace is fragile, and humans are imperfect." The artwork not only adds artistic value but also holds social significance by being visible to thousands daily and approximately 1.6 million people monthly.
