Geopolitical Reset As Global Leaders At WGS 2026 Map Power Shifts And Diplomacy

Senior speakers at the World Governments Summit 2026 said repeated confrontations in the Middle East region have inflicted deep political and economic damage, and warned that rising tensions, shifting alliances and internal pressures within major powers are combining to create a fragile global environment that demands careful diplomacy, restraint and new approaches to regional security.

The Summit, organised under the theme "Shaping Future Governments", gathers global leaders and policymakers to analyse these risks. In a session titled "The Geopolitical Reset", Mike Pompeo, Dr. Anwar Gargash and Frederick Kempe discussed how changing power centres, renewed rivalry among major states and local conflicts are together reshaping the international order.

Dr. Anwar Gargash said the Middle East region has already paid a high price for recent wars and confrontations, both in political influence and economic opportunity, and stressed that avoiding any new crisis is now the main priority for regional states. Gargash added: "What is required are direct negotiations between Iran and the United States that lead to clear understandings on core issues, foremost among them the nuclear file, so it does not remain a permanent source of regional instability."

Gargash explained that the UAE reads global shifts through a pragmatic lens, separating intense media debate from developments on the ground. He said the country’s strategy is based on economic diversification, building partnerships, multilateral cooperation, support for regional peace and confronting extremism. "The UAE will continue to be a trailblazer in the region, we will pursue economic policies that are quite ambitious, we will continue creating a very diverse society and economy," he said. "We will also continue to champion the issue of peace in the region," he added.

Addressing Iran, Mike Pompeo said past efforts had shown a repeated pattern of non-compliance from Tehran, which made a lasting settlement difficult under current leadership. Pompeo said that achieving a long-term agreement with Iran that guarantees regional stability remains a complex challenge, and that deterrence and pressure were designed to drive genuine behavioural change, not to merely manage crises in the short term.

Frederick Kempe said the wider international system is in a decisive transitional phase, in which regional conflicts intersect with internal political and economic strains inside major powers, while changing alliances and financial pressures influence where real power lies. Kempe argued that policymakers must balance diplomacy with credible deterrence, and understand how decisions made in capitals affect both domestic audiences and the broader international landscape, especially in areas already under stress.

Pomepo also outlined the U.S. approach to European security, saying allies should share responsibilities more evenly. He underlined that sustainable peace in Europe relies on economic growth, and said that adjusting transatlantic relations should be read as a search for a realistic division of commitments and burdens, rather than a sign of U.S. withdrawal from the continent.

The World Governments Summit 2026 hosts more than 60 heads of state and government and their deputies, over 500 ministers, and representatives from over 150 governments, alongside 80 international and regional organisations, 700 global CEOs and more than 6,250 participants. This broad attendance frames the Middle East region’s concerns within a global conversation on stability, economic resilience and future governance.
