UAE Ministry Of Culture Hosts Workshop On Geographical Indications System For National Products

The Ministry of Culture recently hosted a workshop focusing on the ‘Geographical Indications (GI) system for national products’. This event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), is part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to protect cultural heritage. The initiative seeks to legally safeguard Emirati products, ensuring their authenticity and enhancing their market presence both locally and internationally.

A Geographical Indication (GI) is a label that identifies products with qualities or characteristics linked to their place of origin. This system serves as a vital legal and economic tool, helping protect local product identities while boosting their market value. In the UAE, notable examples include Hatta Honey, Al Dhafra Dabbas Dates, RAK Ceramics, and Al Khoos.

Mubarak Al Nakhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, stated, "The ‘National Project for the Protection of Geographically Defined Products’ represents a significant milestone in the UAE's efforts to develop a creative economy rooted in cultural identity. Beyond safeguarding products, the project establishes an integrated framework that highlights the distinctive features of the country's diverse regions. More importantly, it supports artisans and creators through a legislative and operational ecosystem that enables them to fully leverage their intellectual property rights and expand their access to local and global markets."

Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini from the Ministry of Economy and Tourism highlighted the commitment to increasing the value of national GIs through a new registration system. This initiative marks progress in advancing intellectual property frameworks in the UAE. "This system establishes a comprehensive national mechanism to protect products linked to their geographical origin, preserve their authentic identity, and raise awareness of their cultural and economic importance—ultimately strengthening their market value and reinforcing their presence in regional and international markets."

The workshop also aimed at raising awareness about GIs' significance in empowering producers. It introduced participants to registration processes, protection requirements, and economic benefits offered by this system. These insights are crucial for building competitive and sustainable value chains.

Global Best Practices

Participants explored international best practices related to Geographical Indications during the workshop. They examined successful models worldwide that could be applied within the UAE context. The session reviewed objectives like raising awareness about protecting national products as cultural assets contributing towards strengthening national value chains.

Dr. Al Muaini further noted that Geographical Indications are a key category of trademark that reflect the close relationship between a product’s quality, reputation, and unique characteristics and the geographical environment from which it originates. They enable entrepreneurs to maximise the value of their products locally and globally.

In May, an important step was taken when the Ministry introduced this GI system for national products—the first service of its kind in UAE history. By safeguarding Emirati items distinguished by unique geographical origins, it aims at enhancing intellectual property protection frameworks while broadening global presence for these industries.

The collaborative effort between various ministries underscores commitment towards establishing an international model for safeguarding cultural assets while unlocking opportunities within creative industries across local markets globally recognised symbols quality national identity.

The workshop concluded by emphasising how leveraging these items as cultural economic assets can generate opportunities creators artisans expand marketing export channels supporting creative economy
