Genomics For Longevity Report Released By Abu Dhabi's Department Of Health To Enhance Precision Medicine

The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) and Oliver Wyman, a global consulting firm, have released a report titled "Genomics For Longevity" during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week. This report examines how genomics can improve clinical outcomes, boost economic growth, and align with Abu Dhabi's vision for precision medicine.

The report presents a comprehensive framework for integrating genomics into Abu Dhabi's healthcare systems. It focuses on three strategic pillars: enabling technology, policy and governance, and talent development. These pillars aim to create a resilient genomics ecosystem that offers personalised treatment plans based on individual genetic profiles.

Abu Dhabi Unveils Genomics for Longevity Report

Sumit Sharma from Oliver Wyman highlighted Abu Dhabi's commitment to incorporating genomics into its healthcare system as a significant step towards precision medicine. This initiative positions the Emirate as a leader in longevity-focused healthcare and promises substantial economic and societal benefits.

Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei from DoH stated that agility and foresight are crucial in the rapidly evolving field of genomics. She emphasised that the report serves as both a roadmap and a call to action for policymakers, investors, and health leaders to advance personalised care.

The report indicates that mapping genetic risk factors and applying precision therapies could reduce chronic illnesses like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases by 20–30 percent at the population level. This is supported by Abu Dhabi's advanced digital infrastructure and focus on public health.

Dr. Nicole Sirotin from The Institute for Healthier Living Abu Dhabi noted the potential of genomics in addressing early onset diseases prevalent in the region. She praised Abu Dhabi’s approach to combining research with clinical practice to lead in preventive healthcare.

Emirate Genome Programme

The Emirate Genome Programme is one of the largest sequencing initiatives in the region, with 800,000 genomes sequenced so far. This programme provides a strong foundation for transforming healthcare through genomics in Abu Dhabi.

The theme "Towards longevity: Redefined health and wellbeing" underscores Abu Dhabi’s pioneering role in precision medicine. The report outlines how genomics can redefine health by offering tailored treatments based on genetic data.

This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s strategic prioritisation of public health, supported by its tech-savvy population. The integration of genomics into healthcare systems is expected to drive significant advancements in medical care across the Emirate.
