The National Center for Wildlife clarified that the recently announced pups, resembling dire wolves, are not clones but genetically modified gray wolves. The modification involved inserting 14 genes from dire wolf fossils and dogs into the gray wolf. This resulted in a creature with 99.5% of the gray wolf's genetics but with features like larger size, white fur, and bigger fangs.

Experts at the center explained that dire wolves existed in prehistoric times in the Americas before going extinct 13,000 years ago. They emphasized that these animals are not clones of the extinct species but are modified using CRISPR-Cas9 technology. This method has been widely used in crops and domestic animals for decades.

The center expressed concerns about environmental risks posed by such projects.
