H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, recently opened the GEMS School of Research and Innovation (SRI) in Dubai Sports City. This institution is renowned for its focus on AI-driven and innovation-centred education. The school spans 47,600 square metres and integrates advanced AI technologies with sustainable design to foster creativity and collaboration among students.

The core of SRI's campus is the Research Hub, a three-storey vertical learning space replacing traditional libraries with a collaborative research centre. This hub connects students from early years to senior school, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking. It features immersive research zones, robotics labs, Extended Reality studios, and 360° digital lounges, aligning with national priorities in sustainability, innovation, and space exploration.

SRI is at the forefront of educational innovation in the UAE. It offers a fully AI-integrated ecosystem where teachers use AI-enabled devices and software to enhance creativity and research skills. The school also pioneers humanoid and quadruped robotics in learning environments and hosts a professional-grade Esports and Game Design Academy.

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, expressed gratitude for Sheikh Mansoor's presence at the inauguration. He stated: "We are deeply honoured by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the inauguration of SRI." He added that SRI embodies their mission to deliver world-class education that empowers students to shape the future.

Sustainability is integral to SRI’s operations. The LEED Gold-certified campus generates 30% of its power from solar energy while using smart systems for lighting and ventilation optimisation. Rainwater harvesting, low-flow fixtures, and hydroponic gardens further reduce consumption while teaching students sustainable practices through real-world applications.

Sheikh Mansoor praised GEMS Education for its contributions to Dubai’s educational landscape. He emphasised the private sector's crucial role in supporting advanced academic programmes that offer quality, innovation, and diverse choices for students and parents. These efforts align with the Education Strategy 2033 goals to transform education into a world-class student-centred model.

Holistic Development Focus

SRI supports holistic development beyond technological advancements. Its facilities include over 30,000 sq. ft. of innovation zones catering to interests like AI, robotics, music, film, and broadcasting. The athletic facilities feature an Olympic-size swimming pool, FIFA-certified football pitch, athletics track, and fencing facility to nurture physical potential alongside academic excellence.

The school also boasts a professional-grade Media Suite equipped with industry-standard tools for producing live news broadcasts and podcasts. Additionally, it houses the region’s first all-Steinway Premier Music Academy with concert-level instruments. Industry professionals within its faculty bridge classroom learning with real-world expertise.

Strategic Collaborations

SRI collaborates strategically with companies like Microsoft, HP, KUKA Robotics, Kawasaki Robotics, Unitree, EON Reality, and Plug & Play Tech Center. These partnerships exemplify GEMS Education’s commitment to delivering world-class learning experiences that empower students in an ever-evolving world.

Sheikh Mansoor highlighted Dubai’s commitment to fostering an educational environment promoting academic excellence and individual development. He stated: "Dubai continues to foster a comprehensive educational environment that promotes academic excellence...Education remains the cornerstone of our nation’s future." Initiatives like SRI play a vital role in preparing future generations for leadership roles driven by creativity and responsibility.
