GCAA Introduces Digital Platform To Streamline CORSIA Implementation For UAE Carriers
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has introduced the first digital platform in the region for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). CORSIA, initiated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in 2016, began its implementation in 2019. This platform is crucial for calculating offset and reduction values of carbon units used by national carriers.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasised the UAE's dedication to meeting global standards to mitigate aviation emissions. He stated, "The UAE is fully committed to adhering to all global and international requirements to reduce the negative impact of international aviation emissions." The country has been actively supporting ICAO's climate change initiatives since 2010.

The digital platform simplifies data submission processes that were previously manual and time-consuming. It ensures confidentiality and ease of use for UAE carriers while reducing review times and human error. This shift from traditional methods marks a significant advancement in data handling efficiency.
CORSIA provides a framework to minimise international aviation emissions, considering each country's unique circumstances. It mandates that national carriers offset unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions using carbon market emission units. These are emissions not reducible through technology, operational improvements, or sustainable fuel.
In November 2023, the 'Dubai Framework for Aviation Fuel' was adopted with a target to cut international aviation emissions by 5% by 2030. This initiative exemplifies the UAE's proactive approach in collaborating with ICAO member states to achieve emission reduction goals.
Enhancing Data Management
The new digital platform also acts as an archival system, maintaining comprehensive records of international emissions data. This will aid in developing future applications related to carbon emission offsetting and reduction in aviation. The automated system significantly enhances data management capabilities for UAE carriers.
CORSIA remains the only globally approved system for implementation, encompassing all fuel standards and future developments within its framework. The launch of this digital platform underscores the UAE's commitment to sustainable aviation practices and its leadership role in regional environmental initiatives.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to environmental sustainability within the aviation sector, aligning with global efforts to address climate change challenges effectively.
