GCC Secretary-General Highlights Strong Gulf-US Partnership Built On Trust And Shared Values
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General, Jasem Albudaiwi, underscored the longstanding partnership between the GCC and the United States. This relationship, spanning over 40 years, is rooted in mutual trust and shared interests. Albudaiwi's remarks were made during a keynote speech at the second Gulf Studies Symposium held at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Albudaiwi highlighted the robust economic ties between the GCC and the US, noting that trade exceeded $90 billion in 2023. He pointed out that Gulf investments in the US complement the growing presence of American companies in Gulf markets. This dynamic economic partnership reflects mutual prosperity and stability.

The GCC region is experiencing significant growth, with a population of over 57 million people. Nearly half of this population is under 30, indicating a youthful and ambitious demographic poised for transformation. Albudaiwi mentioned that the region's GDP was around $2.1 trillion in 2023, with projections suggesting it could reach $6 trillion by 2050.
Sovereign wealth funds from GCC countries manage over $3.2 trillion, accounting for about one-third of global totals. Additionally, foreign reserves exceed $700 billion. These figures highlight the region's economic strength and potential for future growth.
Despite being global leaders in oil and gas production, GCC countries are investing heavily in clean energy, artificial intelligence, digital economies, and space exploration. Albudaiwi emphasized their commitment to diversification strategies aimed at achieving long-term sustainability and global aspirations beyond traditional energy sectors.
Educational ties also play a crucial role in this partnership. Over 37,000 students from GCC countries are currently enrolled in American universities. This educational exchange fosters mutual understanding and strengthens cultural connections between the regions.
Strategic Cooperation Beyond Economics
Albudaiwi reaffirmed the dedication of GCC leaders to enhancing cooperation with the United States across various domains. This includes both bilateral and multilateral relations involving government entities and private sectors on strategic and humanitarian issues.
"The GCC-US partnership transcends agreements," he stated. "It represents a relationship founded on shared values, enriched by mutual experiences, and driven by a common vision." His words reflect a deep commitment to maintaining strong ties between these regions.
The symposium was organized by Georgetown University alongside the Gulf International Forum and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. Attendees included US administration officials, members of Congress, think tank representatives, university faculty members, and students.
