GCC And UK Ministers Meet To Discuss Regional Peace And Security Initiatives
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United Kingdom recently held a ministerial meeting in New York. The gathering focused on regional and global issues, aiming to strengthen coordination under the GCC-UK Strategic Partnership. The ministers emphasised their commitment to promoting peace, security, and prosperity. They praised Gulf States' efforts in resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and mediation.
The ministers condemned Israel's strike on Doha on September 9, viewing it as a violation of Qatar's sovereignty. They supported Qatar's territorial integrity, aligning with United Nations Charter principles. Such actions were seen as hindering ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, which are crucial for lasting peace. The ministers expressed full support for Qatar's mediation role between Israel and Hamas.

The ministers highlighted the importance of preserving Jerusalem's historic status quo and recognised Jordan's special role in this regard. They reiterated their support for the Palestinian Authority and stressed unified governance in Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority. They reaffirmed their commitment to Palestinian self-determination aspirations.
Efforts to resolve the maritime border issue between Iraq and Kuwait were discussed. Ministers emphasised Kuwait’s sovereignty and urged adherence to international conventions, including UN Security Council Resolution 833. They called for complete demarcation of maritime borders beyond Mark 162 according to international law principles.
The ministers addressed Syria's situation, supporting an inclusive political transition respecting all Syrians' rights. They welcomed Syria’s roadmap announcement for resolving As-Suwayda Governorate crisis, praising Jordan and the US efforts. They committed to supporting Syria’s path towards stability and economic recovery.
Regarding Yemen, ministers stressed a stable government is vital for peace. They condemned Houthi aggression threatening maritime safety and regional economies. A political process leading to a sustainable settlement was deemed essential for Yemen’s future stability.
Trade Relations Enhancement
The GCC-UK trading relationship was highlighted, with bilateral trade surpassing £53 billion ($72 billion) in 2024. Ministers agreed on enhancing trade further to boost mutual growth. Both sides reaffirmed commitment to free trade promotion, prioritising conclusion of the GCC-UK Free Trade Agreement.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan was also addressed. Ministers welcomed efforts by UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the US towards restoring peace in Sudan. An urgent humanitarian ceasefire in El Fasher was called for to facilitate aid delivery into Darfur amid famine conditions.
Global Cooperation Initiatives
Ministers discussed Iran’s nuclear program, agreeing that Iran should never possess nuclear weapons. They appreciated Oman’s intermediary role between the US and Iran. Constructive cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency was emphasised to enhance regional security.
On Ukraine, ministers reaffirmed commitment to a just peace respecting sovereignty principles per UN Charter guidelines. Efforts led by the US with Middle Eastern partners like Saudi Arabia were acknowledged for promoting dialogue and stability.
The meeting concluded with a shared determination to contribute to regional security under the GCC-UK Strategic Partnership framework. Closer relations across political, security, and economic fields were underscored as mutual goals moving forward.
