GCC Secretary-General Jassim Albudaiwi Affirms Historical Relations With The UK And Trade Developments
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jassim Albudaiwi highlighted the longstanding ties between the GCC and the United Kingdom. He noted that the 2016 Bahrain Summit was pivotal, as it brought together GCC leaders and the UK, launching a strategic partnership to enhance political, defense, security, and commercial relations. This partnership also aimed to strengthen cultural and social connections.
The secretary-general emphasised the progress in economic relations, noting that trade between the GCC and the UK reached approximately $32 billion in 2023. He mentioned ongoing negotiations for a free-trade agreement, expressing optimism about its conclusion soon. His comments were made during a lecture at Durham University’s Institute of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

Albudaiwi discussed significant initiatives like the GCC-UK Public-Private Partnership Conference held in London in April 2017. This event underscored efforts to deepen cooperation through annual joint ministerial meetings. In June 2022, negotiations began for a free-trade agreement, marking a qualitative leap in economic relations.
The secretary-general reviewed the GCC's achievements since its inception, focusing on connecting with neighbours and global partners. These efforts aim to exchange knowledge, promote shared values, and foster international cooperation for stability and prosperity. The GCC is committed to expanding trade partnerships through new agreements.
Since its establishment in 1981, the GCC has prioritised preventive diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for sovereignty. Albudaiwi highlighted this approach's role in resolving conflicts peacefully without escalation or external interference. The GCC actively supports stability and sustainable development through mediation efforts.
The organisation has hosted numerous regional and international conferences to aid countries affected by conflicts. It provides humanitarian relief and reconstruction assistance as part of its peacebuilding initiatives. These actions reflect the GCC's dedication to creating a supportive political environment in the region.
Albudaiwi’s lecture included participation from students, faculty members, experts, and specialists in Gulf-British relations. His remarks underscored the importance of continued collaboration between the GCC and UK to develop their relationship further.
The secretary-general reiterated his hope for a swift conclusion to ongoing free-trade agreement negotiations. He stressed that these agreements are crucial for diversifying trade partnerships and enhancing economic ties between both regions.
