Saudi Delegation Leads GCC-Türkiye Free Trade Agreement Talks
The General Authority of Foreign Trade (GAFT), represented by GAFT Deputy Governor for International Organizations and Agreements and head of the Saudi negotiating team Farid bin Saeed Al-Asali, led Saudi Arabia's delegation in the first round of free-trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Türkiye. These talks took place in Ankara from July 29 to 31.
The Saudi negotiating team is tasked with overseeing and monitoring trade negotiations to ensure they align with the Kingdom's trade objectives and policies. They also participate in these negotiations to represent Saudi Arabia's positions and coordinate with countries that have similar trade orientations.

The team comprises eight technical groups focusing on various sectors: goods, services, investment, general texts and provisions, e-commerce, intellectual property, government procurement, and rules of origin. These groups include representatives from 45 government agencies who prepare and coordinate Saudi Arabia's negotiating positions, initiatives, and proposals within the World Trade Organization (WTO) and FTAs.
In 2023, the trade volume between Saudi Arabia and Türkiye reached approximately USD 7 billion. Plastics and metal products were among the most significant exports from Saudi Arabia, while machinery, mechanical tools and their spare parts, and carpets were notable imports from Türkiye.
GAFT aims to enhance Saudi Arabia's international trade benefits by increasing its global presence and active participation in international organizations. This effort ensures the achievement of common goals and sustainable development.
These technical groups submit necessary reports to the Saudi negotiating team regarding their respective areas. This coordination helps in preparing comprehensive strategies for international trade discussions.
The involvement of multiple government agencies ensures that all aspects of trade are covered comprehensively. This collaborative approach helps in presenting well-rounded proposals during negotiations.
Farid bin Saeed Al-Asali leads these efforts to ensure that Saudi Arabia's interests are well-represented in international trade forums. His leadership is crucial in aligning the Kingdom’s trade policies with its broader economic goals.
The ongoing negotiations aim to establish a robust framework for free trade between GCC countries and Türkiye. This framework will facilitate smoother trade relations and mutual economic growth.
By participating actively in these negotiations, Saudi Arabia seeks to strengthen its economic ties with Türkiye. This engagement is part of a broader strategy to diversify its economic partnerships globally.
The GAFT’s role extends beyond just negotiation; it also involves ensuring that the outcomes of these discussions are beneficial for the Kingdom’s long-term economic interests. This strategic approach is vital for sustainable economic development.
Saudi Arabia’s proactive participation in international trade discussions reflects its commitment to enhancing its global economic footprint. This involvement is essential for achieving broader economic diversification goals.
The collaboration between various government agencies under GAFT’s guidance ensures that all relevant sectors are adequately represented in international trade negotiations. This comprehensive representation is key to securing favourable outcomes for the Kingdom.
Through these efforts, GAFT aims to position Saudi Arabia as a significant player in global trade. The authority’s strategic initiatives are designed to maximize the Kingdom’s international trade gains effectively.
This structured approach towards international trade negotiations highlights Saudi Arabia’s dedication to fostering strong economic partnerships worldwide. The focus remains on achieving sustainable development through strategic global engagements.
