UAE Ministry Of Interior Hosts GCC Strategy For Combating Drugs Workshop To Enhance Regional Cooperation

The UAE Ministry of Interior is hosting a workshop on the GCC Strategy for Combating Drugs (2025-2028). This event, held at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi from September 16-19, is a collaborative effort between the GCC General Secretariat and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The workshop aims to enhance international cooperation and develop a unified approach to drug control within the GCC region.

Key figures attending include Jasim Al-Badawi, Secretary-General of the GCC, Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Judge Dr. Hatem Aly from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime for the GCC, and Brigadier Mubarak Saeed Al Khaili, Head of the GCC Police Force. Representatives from anti-drug authorities across GCC nations, UN consultants, and various experts are also present.

Al-Badawi opened the workshop by thanking the UAE for hosting this significant event. He praised efforts made by all parties in drafting a unified strategy aligned with resolutions from the 40th meeting of GCC Interior Ministers held in Muscat on November 8, 2023. Al-Badawi stated, "Our presence today reflects our joint commitment at the regional and international levels to address one of the biggest challenges facing our societies—the phenomenon of drug smuggling and its devastating effects."

He highlighted that this initiative comes at a crucial time as GCC countries work to unify their efforts against drug threats affecting individuals, families, and societies. He added that drugs undermine health, social security, economic stability, and political stability. The workshop represents an advanced step toward strengthening regional cooperation in tackling drug smuggling.

Al-Badawi emphasized that drugs are not just an individual problem but a societal crisis requiring united efforts. He stressed collective responsibility in drafting this unified strategy aimed at protecting youth and countering threats they face. The strategy addresses addiction's effects through awareness campaigns, treatment programs, and rehabilitation efforts.

He noted universities and research centers play vital roles in implementing this strategy by increasing societal understanding of risks while facilitating reintegration into society. Cooperation among GCC countries is essential for success; each nation brings unique experiences contributing to effective solutions.

Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili welcomed attendees to the UAE and expressed satisfaction with progress made towards creating a unified strategy aligning with regional leaders' aspirations for safety and stability. Al Khaili stated that "The UAE Ministry of Interior is committed to adopting the best security practices to combat this societal scourge."
