GCC Secretary-General Affirms Commitment To Economic Unity And Global Hub Status
During the 69th GCC Commercial Cooperation Committee meeting in Kuwait, Jasem Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), highlighted the significant efforts by GCC states to boost economic cooperation and integration. This initiative aims to establish the GCC as a prominent global hub for finance, investment, and economy. The meeting was led by Khalifa Abdullah Al-Ajeel, Kuwait's Minister of Commerce and Industry.
The GCC states are working diligently to realise their leaders' visions for economic unity. They aim to enhance trade exchange and improve goods and services flow among member countries. This effort is crucial for achieving Gulf economic unity and the Gulf Common Market. Albudaiwi stressed that these goals require overcoming obstacles through joint cooperation.

Albudaiwi shared that the GCC's total GDP at current prices reached about $2.2 trillion in 2023, with an expected increase to $2.3 trillion in 2024. This growth rate of 2.2% places the GCC bloc ninth globally by GDP, showcasing the resilience of Gulf economies. The region's ability to recover and grow remains strong.
The volume of intra-GCC trade, measured by total intra-commodity exports, exceeded $132 billion in 2023. It is projected to rise above $145 billion in 2024, marking a growth rate of 9.8%, up from 5.0% the previous year. These figures highlight both the economic stature of GCC states and promising opportunities for further cooperation.
Albudaiwi emphasised that building a robust economy relies on collaboration among nations. The successes achieved so far result from sincere efforts by the Commercial Cooperation Committee to promote integration among member states. He noted that these indicators confirm the growing strength of Gulf trade exchange.
Commitment to Economic Unity
The secretary-general reiterated that sincere determination drives GCC states to embody their leaders' visions for economic cooperation and integration. By facilitating trade exchanges, they aim to achieve desired economic unity across various commercial fields. This commitment reflects significant potential for enhancing joint Gulf cooperation.
"Building a strong and sustainable economy can only be achieved through joint cooperation and integration among nations," Albudaiwi stated during his speech at the meeting attended by commerce ministers from all GCC states.
The responsibility now lies with all involved parties to implement this vision effectively, ensuring optimal investment in promising opportunities across diverse sectors within the region.
