GCC Secretary-General Highlights Urgent Priority Of Combatting Drug Abuse Across Member States
GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi emphasised the high priority that GCC member states place on combating drug abuse. This commitment stems from their dedication to safeguarding societies and enhancing citizens' security. His remarks were made during an event marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Gulf Anti-Drug Week at the General Secretariat headquarters in Riyadh, attended by various interior ministries and officials from GCC countries.
Albudaiwi highlighted that this occasion reflects the GCC's ongoing commitment to collective action against drugs. The leaders of the GCC states prioritise this issue, recognising it as a national responsibility to protect human life and societal security. The GCC has formed a united front through security, legislative, and awareness efforts to combat drug sources and protect the youth and future of the Gulf region.

The Gulf Strategy for Combating Drugs (2025 – 2028) provides a comprehensive framework for unifying GCC efforts in this critical area. It focuses on reducing drug supply and demand, eliminating sources, promoting alternative development, enhancing legislation, combating money laundering from drug trafficking, establishing a joint monitoring system, and building capacity through training. These pillars aim to integrate preventive, security, and therapeutic measures for an effective response.
Albudaiwi also stressed the vital role of families and society as the first line of defence against drugs. Through conscious upbringing, open dialogue, and continuous care, families can protect youth from these dangers. Schools, media outlets, religious leaders, and civil society institutions also play crucial roles in raising awareness and fostering a safe environment for young people.
He underscored the importance of societal integration for individuals recovering from addiction. "The family has a significant and valuable role in providing emotional and social support," he stated. Creating a stable environment boosts self-confidence in recovering individuals, encouraging them to rebuild their lives. The GCC has established hospitals and centres offering treatment programmes to aid recovery without stigma or isolation.
Albudaiwi expressed pride in collaborating with strategic partners across various ministries within the Council states. Key partners include ministries of interior, health, justice, education, social affairs, customs authorities, coast guards, national drug control committees, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. He affirmed their commitment to strengthening these partnerships for regional and international coordination.
The event underscored the GCC's dedication to tackling drug-related challenges through unified efforts across multiple sectors. By focusing on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation programmes, and strategic partnerships with relevant bodies both regionally and internationally, they aim to create a safer environment for all citizens.
