GCC Secretary-General Launches Radiological Data Exchange Platform To Enhance Regional Safety

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General, Jasem Albudaiwi, has introduced the Radiological Data Exchange Platform Project (GCC-RDEP). This initiative was launched in partnership with the GCC Emergency Management Centre, the Nuclear Safety Authority, and the European Union's Joint Research Centre. The event took place at the GCC General Secretariat headquarters in Riyadh, with EU Ambassador Christophe Farnaud present.

Albudaiwi highlighted that the creation of an Operations Room at the GCC Emergency Management Centre is a result of directives from GCC ministers of interior and defense. This step underscores the council's dedication to regional security and stability. By integrating early warning systems across GCC states, they aim to enhance their capabilities with advanced technologies to quickly predict and manage potential emergencies.

He stated, "We are now witnessing the results of ongoing and exceptional efforts through the GCC-RDEP project." This project is designed to lessen the impact of radiological and nuclear disasters by sharing data from monitoring systems within the GCC states and the EU’s Joint Research Centre. This collaboration facilitates early disaster detection, advanced simulation analysis, and provides decision-makers with technical recommendations for appropriate actions.

The press release also noted Albudaiwi's commendation of the robust ties between the GCC and EU. He referred to significant outcomes from their first summit held in Brussels in October 2024. These include joint cooperation areas like technical collaboration and strategies for mitigating radiological and nuclear disaster effects.
