GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi Participates In EU Political And Security Committee Meeting In Brussels
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi attended an informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Political and Security Committee in Brussels. The meeting was held at the EU headquarters, following an invitation from Ambassador Delphine Pronk, chair of the committee and deputy political director of the European External Action Service (EEAS). Albudaiwi emphasised that this session aims to strengthen GCC-EU relations.
Albudaiwi highlighted the importance of cultural and educational cooperation between the GCC and EU. He believes such collaboration enriches societies through mutual learning and strengthens friendship bonds. "These dialogues will contribute to promoting peace and prosperity in both regions, as the relationship between the two sides has become stronger than ever, based on a strategic consensus in diplomacy, security cooperation, and economic collaboration," he stated.

The secretary-general underscored the significance of developing trade and investment ties. He mentioned initiatives like the Joint Action Programme to diversify economies and create jobs for youth. Albudaiwi also noted that energy security and climate action are crucial areas where GCC resources and EU green technologies can work together for sustainability.
Regarding a free trade agreement (FTA), Albudaiwi acknowledged ongoing discussions between GCC and EU negotiators. Despite past challenges, both parties see potential benefits in a comprehensive trade deal. "Despite the challenges faced in previous negotiations, both parties recognize the significant benefits that a comprehensive trade agreement would bring," he remarked.
Albudaiwi addressed Schengen visa exemptions for GCC citizens, stressing progress is needed here. He noted that recent joint statements reaffirm commitments to achieving a safe visa-free travel arrangement. This would enhance people-to-people links and offer economic, cultural, and educational benefits for both regions.
The secretary-general reviewed regional diplomatic relations, highlighting GCC-EU partnerships in conflict resolution. He praised the EU's Ninth Conference on Syria for securing international support for Syrians. Albudaiwi also discussed GCC member states' perspectives on issues like Palestine and Gaza.
Commitment to Peaceful Resolutions
Albudaiwi called for continued cooperation in resolving crises using joint diplomatic influence. He stressed preventing new conflicts through enhanced dialogue. The October 2024 joint statement from GCC and EU reflects their deepening partnership in these efforts.
"The recent joint statement from the GCC-European Union summit reaffirmed both parties' commitment to working towards a safe and beneficial visa-free travel arrangement between the GCC countries and the European Schengen Area," he stated.
Concluding his remarks, Albudaiwi reiterated that the partnership between GCC and EU is vital for stability, cooperation, and shared prosperity. He urged ongoing collaboration to turn shared aspirations into tangible actions that address current challenges while ensuring future stability for both Gulf nations and Europe.
