GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi Denounces Iranian Officials' Statements On Member States' Sovereignty
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has voiced its disapproval of recent remarks by Iranian officials. These comments, according to GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi, infringe on the sovereignty of Bahrain and the rights of the UAE concerning its islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—occupied by Iran. Additionally, they affect the Durra oil field, jointly owned by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Albudaiwi highlighted that these statements contradict the ongoing efforts by GCC states to foster better relations with Iran. He noted that the GCC has consistently emphasized the importance of adhering to international principles such as non-interference in internal affairs and respecting state sovereignty. "These statements contained fallacies, false claims, and rejected allegations that contradict the principles of non-interference in internal affairs and good neighborliness—principles which Iran violated through its aggression against the sovereignty and independence of the State of Qatar," he stated.

The GCC states have shown goodwill towards Iran, focusing on its security and stability for regional peace. Albudaiwi stressed their commitment to sparing the region from tension and escalation. He mentioned that this dedication was evident during meetings between GCC foreign ministers and Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.
Albudaiwi urged Iran to stop spreading misleading claims that damage trust and obstruct communication. He emphasized that regional countries need cooperation for security, stability, growth, and prosperity. The GCC remains committed to dialogue and diplomatic solutions in international relations.
"The GCC states have consistently reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the foundations and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international law, including the principles of good neighborliness, respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and refraining from the use or threat of force," Albudaiwi emphasized.
Efforts for Regional Stability
He pointed out that council member states value continued bilateral communication with Iran to enhance shared interests and maintain regional security. The GCC's commitment to peace, coexistence, and dialogue is crucial for achieving mutual aspirations among regional nations.
The GCC's stance reflects a desire for constructive engagement with Iran while maintaining respect for sovereignty. This approach aims to ensure stability in a region where cooperation is vital for progress.
