GCC Secretary General Emphasises Commitment To Syria And Lebanon's Security At 46th Meeting

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held its 46th extraordinary Ministerial Council meeting to address the ongoing situations in Syria and Lebanon. Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi emphasised the GCC's dedication to enhancing security and stability in these nations amid complex regional challenges. The meeting, chaired by Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al Yahya, included foreign ministers from GCC member states.

Albudaiwi expressed gratitude to Kuwait's Amir, Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, for supporting joint Gulf cooperation and hosting the meeting. He stated, "This meeting reflects the GCC states' unwavering commitment to addressing issues facing the Arab and Islamic nations." The focus was on strengthening cooperation among member states to tackle pressing challenges and foster regional security and stability.

GCC Meeting Focuses on Syria and Lebanon's Security

Albudaiwi highlighted the outcomes of the 45th Supreme Council summit, which addressed critical developments like the Israeli war in Gaza. The summit called for intensified efforts to halt violations against Palestinians and urged the UN Security Council to enforce resolutions No. 2735, 2712, and 2720. These resolutions aim to alleviate Palestinian suffering.

Regarding Syria, Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC's support for the Syrian people. He praised Kuwait for hosting donor conferences addressing humanitarian needs and noted that GCC states have contributed over $8 billion in relief aid. Additionally, they host over 2 million Syrian refugees, providing them with rights and privileges for a dignified life.

In Lebanon, Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC's commitment to supporting sovereignty, security, and stability. He condemned Israeli violations of Lebanese territory and stressed implementing comprehensive reforms to help Lebanon overcome its crises. Adherence to Security Council Resolution 1701 is crucial for ensuring respect for Lebanon’s territorial integrity.

Albudaiwi condemned Israeli attacks on Syria, including occupation of buffer zones along borders and settlement expansion in Golan Heights. He called these actions blatant international law violations and urged Israel's withdrawal from occupied Syrian territories. He commended interim Syrian government steps towards peaceful power transfer.

Efforts Towards Peace

The Secretary General emphasised unified Syrian efforts prioritising national interests through dialogue. This approach aims to fulfil aspirations for security, stability, and development while preserving state institutions and resources. Such efforts are vital for restoring Syria's regional standing.

He also highlighted political efforts by GCC states supporting UN initiatives for a political solution in Syria based on Geneva Statement 1 and Security Council Resolution No. 2254. These efforts urge immediate reforms by the Syrian regime while safeguarding unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity free from foreign interference.

Albudaiwi concluded by reaffirming strong ties between GCC states with Syria and Lebanon. He pledged continued efforts ensuring their security and stability contributing to prosperity and improved living standards of their peoples.
