GCC Marine Safety Initiatives Emphasised By Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi At UN Ocean Conference In France

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is actively working to ensure marine and environmental safety, according to Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi. He highlighted the GCC's investment in advanced technologies aimed at minimising spill risks and safeguarding the Gulf's marine environment. "The GCC countries are investing in modern technologies to reduce the risk of spills and protect the marine environment in the Gulf," he stated.

Albudaiwi made these remarks during his speech at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference, which was hosted by France and Costa Rica in Nice, under the patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron. The event gathered leaders, senior officials, and experts from across the globe to discuss ocean conservation.

GCC Highlights Marine Safety at UN Conference

The GCC's dedication aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14), which focuses on conserving oceans and marine resources. Albudaiwi emphasised that despite facing numerous environmental challenges, the GCC remains committed to achieving these goals. "These efforts embody a strong commitment from the GCC to achieve the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14), amidst numerous environmental challenges," he stated.

The Arabian Gulf is a critical area for global maritime activity, with over 40,000 ships passing through annually. This includes many oil tankers crucial for the global economy. Albudaiwi noted that this makes the region not only an environmental asset but also vital for food security, economic growth, and cultural heritage.

Surrounded by three bodies of water, GCC countries are strategically positioned to tackle marine conservation challenges. However, Albudaiwi pointed out that the Arabian Gulf faces significant environmental pressures as a semi-closed sea. It hosts ecologically important ecosystems like coral reefs and mangrove forests, essential for regional prosperity.

"The Arabian Gulf hosts one of the most ecologically and economically significant marine ecosystems in the world," he said. These ecosystems are crucial for food security, economic prosperity, and cultural heritage in GCC nations.

Collaborative Efforts for Ocean Health

Albudaiwi stressed that ocean health transcends borders, necessitating unified policies and data sharing among nations. The GCC is committed to protecting marine resources through sustainable use and regional cooperation aligned with SDG 14 goals. "Therefore, the GCC seeks to unify policies, exchange data, and collaborate on early warning systems to address marine and climate risks," he pointed out.

The Secretary General also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as establishing marine protected areas, combating pollution, managing fisheries sustainably, advancing marine research, and fostering regional cooperation.

Addressing Global Environmental Challenges

Albudaiwi underscored that rising temperatures, ocean acidification, pollution, and habitat loss pose unprecedented challenges to seas worldwide. He called for global collaboration through innovation and shared responsibility to combat these issues affecting ocean health.

"Everyone must work together globally through innovation and shared responsibility to confront environmental degradation affecting ocean health," he said. The GCC remains fully committed to SDG 14 while collaborating with international partners to safeguard oceans for future generations.
