GCC Legislative Councils Host European Parliament President In Abu Dhabi Meeting
The Federal National Council (FNC), led by Saqr Ghobash, hosted a significant meeting with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament. This gathering took place at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and included leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council's legislative bodies. The event aimed to enhance Gulf-European parliamentary relations through dialogue and cooperation.
Ahmed bin Salman Al-Musallam from Bahrain, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh from Saudi Arabia, Khalid Hilal Al Maawali from Oman, Yousef bin Ali Al-Khater from Qatar, and Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC, were among the attendees. Their presence underscored the importance of fostering deeper ties between the GCC and Europe.
In his opening remarks, Ghobash highlighted that this meeting marks a pivotal moment in Gulf-European parliamentary relations. He stressed the importance of enhancing institutional dialogue and coordination between these regions. Such efforts aim to build bridges of understanding between the peoples of the GCC and Europe.
Ghobash also noted that historical ties between GCC states and Europe have evolved over time. Initially based on trade and maritime routes, these relationships now encompass economic, security, political, cultural, and social partnerships. This evolution reflects mutual respect for each other's regional and international roles.
The establishment of the GCC has further clarified and deepened relations with Europe. Member states have worked to strengthen ties with the European Union (EU), recognising its influence in global affairs. Similarly, Europe acknowledges the Gulf region's role in promoting moderation in international politics.
Metsola expressed gratitude to the UAE for hosting this historic meeting. She acknowledged the UAE's commitment to peace and stability in a region facing security challenges. "We gather at a time when the security situation in the Middle East remains deeply concerning," she stated.
Commitment to Peace and Stability
Metsola praised GCC countries for their efforts in ceasefire negotiations and combating terrorism. She emphasised that the partnership between the EU and GCC is both essential and strategic in addressing regional challenges. "I commend your concrete commitments to peace and stability," she added.
Al Budaiwi thanked President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for supporting GCC unity and hosting this meeting. He also appreciated Saqr Ghobash's initiative in convening this session, highlighting its significance for ongoing high-level dialogue between both sides.
This meeting underscores a shared commitment to strengthening Gulf-European relations through dialogue and cooperation. It reflects a mutual understanding of each region's influence on global stability and development.
