GCC Leaders Highlight The Importance Of Supporting Youth For Sustainable Development

The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Albudaiwi, emphasised the vital role of youth in shaping a sustainable future for GCC nations. He noted that GCC leaders prioritise youth support, recognising their importance in nation-building. This commitment was highlighted during the 38th meeting of the Ministers of Youth and Sports in the GCC, held in Kuwait, chaired by Abdulrahman Badah Al Mutairi.

Albudaiwi stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among Gulf countries to advance youth initiatives. These efforts align with the aspirations of GCC leaders and involve launching programs backed by the Committee of Ministers of Youth and Sports. The aim is to elevate youth as key contributors to economic and social goals shared by GCC nations.

"Since the inception of the GCC, youth have been always at the heart of the interests of the leaders of the GCC due to their pivotal role in achieving sustainable development," Albudaiwi stated. He added that empowering youth is crucial for building a prosperous future for the Council. The GCC countries focus on enhancing youth participation across various sectors.

Albudaiwi highlighted that under wise leadership, GCC governments are integrating youth needs into national strategies. This approach aims to keep pace with global changes while optimising investment in human capital. Creating an environment conducive to creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship is a priority for realising youth aspirations.

The latest data from the GCC Statistical Centre shows that in 2024, around 22.1 million individuals aged 15 to 34 reside in GCC countries. This group represents 38.4% of the total population, underscoring their potential and significant demographic influence on future development.

This demographic weight offers promising opportunities for investment and empowerment. Albudaiwi expressed pride in the progress made by GCC countries in global innovation and youth development indices at both Arab and international levels.

Commitment to Future Initiatives

The success of policies adopted by the Council reflects its dedication to enhancing youth status and empowerment. Albudaiwi affirmed that the General Secretariat supports strengthening Gulf cooperation to launch quality initiatives that align with youth aspirations.

These initiatives aim to foster effective contributions from young people towards building a brighter future. The focus remains on creating opportunities for them to thrive economically and socially within their communities.
