GCC Justice Ministers Committee Strengthens Legal Cooperation And Unifies Judicial Regulations

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has made significant strides in harmonising judicial laws across its member states. Jasem Albudaiwi, the GCC Secretary-General, highlighted these achievements during the 34th meeting of the GCC Ministers of Justice in Doha. He noted that the council's efforts have led to unified legal frameworks, including the adoption of over 21 judicial systems as guidelines.

Albudaiwi expressed gratitude to Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his leadership and support. The meeting was chaired by Qatar's Minister of Justice, Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa Al Mohannadi. The secretary-general acknowledged the continuous backing from GCC leaders, which has been crucial in advancing joint Gulf initiatives.

GCC Justice Ministers Unite on Legal Frameworks

Since its inception, the GCC has prioritised legal cooperation among its members. The Committee of Ministers of Justice was established alongside the GCC itself, with its first meeting held in December 1982. This committee has focused on creating unified codes in civil, commercial, personal status, and criminal law areas based on Islamic Sharia principles.

The recent meeting also addressed new agreements that further this cooperation. These include an agreement on extradition and another on civil and personal status matters. Such agreements build upon existing frameworks for executing judgments and handling judicial requests.

A notable development from the meeting was the adoption of the Doha Document on Rules for Juveniles. This document outlines key principles for juvenile trials and is set to be presented to the Supreme Council. It signifies a commitment to improving juvenile justice within GCC countries.

Albudaiwi emphasised that these agreements underscore the importance of continued collaboration among GCC states in judicial matters. "These agreements are a clear testament to the importance of the ongoing cooperation among the council's member states in the judicial field," he stated.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of shared goals and a commitment to furthering legal integration across member states. The progress made reflects a collective effort to enhance legal systems while respecting cultural and religious values.
