GCC Human Rights Declaration Demonstrates Leaders' Commitment To Upholding Human Rights And Dignity
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General, Jasem Albudaiwi, highlighted the GCC's commitment to human rights during an event marking the 10th anniversary of the GCC Human Rights Declaration. He noted that this declaration reflects the leaders' dedication to ensuring a dignified life for citizens. Albudaiwi emphasized adherence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and efforts to build a future based on justice, dignity, and peace.
Albudaiwi pointed out that the GCC member states have made significant progress in advancing human rights, rooted in their societal values. He stated: "A testament to their commitment to these values is the serious pledges contained in the Kuwait Declaration from the 45th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC." This includes empowering women across all sectors and enhancing youth roles in development.

The Kuwait Declaration also addressed human rights protection, particularly highlighting Palestinian suffering under Israeli occupation for 75 years. It called for halting crimes like killings and displacement in Gaza and stressed negotiations for sustainable solutions. These include establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and ensuring refugee rights.
Preserving cultural identity and humanitarian values was another key point in the Kuwait Declaration. It emphasized promoting Gulf identity, Arab culture, and Islamic values while encouraging universities and research centers to support good governance principles.
Albudaiwi acknowledged challenges faced by global human rights advocacy, citing dual standards and violations by Israeli forces against Palestinians as breaches of fundamental principles. He also mentioned rising international conflicts, hatred, and Islamophobia as additional hurdles.
The Secretary General reiterated that GCC states remain committed to tolerance, coexistence, and respect for cultural diversity. Balancing universal human rights with cultural values is crucial while affirming multilateralism and international cooperation for a just future.
Commitment to Fundamental Freedoms
The 2014 GCC Human Rights Declaration, approved in Qatar, underscores the bloc's resolve to advance fundamental rights and freedoms. Albudaiwi noted that these commitments reflect dedication to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The event also launched a report titled "Report on the Efforts of the GCC Member States in Supporting and Protecting Families from a Human Rights Perspective," issued by the General Secretariat of the GCC.
