GCC Countries Attain Advanced Global Rankings In Digital Government Sector
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is making strides in digital transformation within the government sector. Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, the Secretary General of the GCC, highlighted these efforts during a meeting in Doha, Qatar. The Ministerial E-Government Committee has been instrumental in adopting global best practices, leading to high global rankings for GCC countries in digital governance.
Albudaiwi praised the achievements of GCC nations in the United Nations E-Government Development Index for 2024. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates ranked sixth and eleventh globally, respectively. Bahrain secured the tenth position in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Readiness Index, while Oman was placed 22nd. Qatar achieved fifth place globally for growth rate in this index, and Kuwait was recognised among Asia's top twenty countries.

Albudaiwi emphasised that e-government applications are crucial for GCC countries due to their benefits. These applications aim to boost productivity and efficiency, enhancing service delivery to citizens and sectors. The goal is to advance development across the Gulf region through robust digital governance.
The committee welcomed outcomes from roundtable sessions organised with the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO). They tasked the General Secretariat with facilitating discussions between relevant authorities from GCC countries and the DCO. This collaboration aims to explore mutual interests and utilise findings from "The Digital Landscape of the GCC" report.
The Ministerial Committee adopted an annual GCC Digital Government Award to highlight digital transformation's importance in government agencies. This award showcases best practices aligned with GCC principles, promoting a digital economy and knowledge-based society.
Albudaiwi expressed gratitude towards this initiative, which underscores digital transformation's significance. He also extended his best wishes to Saudi Arabia for hosting the 19th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in December. The forum will focus on internet governance policies and sharing international best practices.
This progress reflects pride for the GCC, driven by regional leaders' directives and visions. Albudaiwi noted that these advancements are vital for strengthening economies by creating efficient digital governments.
