GCC Emphasises Sustainable Development And International Cooperation At Summit Of The Future

The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, emphasised the significance of the Summit of the Future during a speech at the United Nations in New York. He highlighted the necessity for enhanced international cooperation to tackle global challenges and promote peace and sustainable development. This summit, he noted, is crucial for reaffirming shared principles and bolstering collective action through more effective multilateral frameworks.

Albudaiwi pointed out that many sustainable development goals are not progressing as expected, with over 30% showing minimal advancement. Despite this, GCC countries have prioritised sustainable development through national visions and joint action plans. These efforts demonstrate their commitment to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.

GCC Focuses on Sustainability and Security

The developmental contributions of GCC countries were highlighted by Albudaiwi, who mentioned their international partnerships and humanitarian aid provided to over 90 nations. He stressed the importance of finding a fair resolution to the Palestinian issue in line with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative. Strengthening global cooperation is essential to meet both current and future generational needs.

Albudaiwi stated that the GCC is prepared to collaborate with all parties to implement recommendations from the Summit of the Future. He noted that both GCC and the Charter of the Future share similar perspectives on security and peace. Recently, GCC introduced its vision for regional security, aligning with that of the Charter of the Future, aiming to achieve global peace and security.

During his address at the high-level week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Albudaiwi reiterated that GCC countries are committed to sustainable development. Their dedication is evident through national strategies and collaborative efforts within GCC frameworks. This commitment aligns with international agreements like those made in Paris and Addis Ababa.

He also underscored that concerted efforts are necessary to keep up with ongoing developments globally. Ensuring these needs are met requires a strengthened international community willing to adapt and cooperate effectively. The GCC's readiness to engage with various stakeholders reflects its proactive approach towards implementing future-oriented recommendations.

The summit serves as an opportunity for nations to reaffirm common values while enhancing joint actions through impactful multilateral approaches. Albudaiwi's remarks underscore how critical it is for countries worldwide to unite in addressing pressing issues affecting sustainable development on a global scale.
