GCC Emphasises Mediation As Key Diplomatic Tool For Resolving Conflicts And Protecting Rights
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Jasem Albudaiwi highlighted the GCC's commitment to mediation as a diplomatic means to resolve conflicts and uphold human rights. He spoke at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, emphasizing the importance of creating an environment where fundamental rights are respected, allowing communities to thrive peacefully.
Albudaiwi noted that this session coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Charter. He described it as a time for reflection on shared challenges and achievements in preserving human dignity. He stressed the need to restore trust in international systems and unify efforts to promote rights amidst declining respect for international norms.

The GCC chief condemned the actions of Israeli forces against Palestinians, highlighting ethnic cleansing and violence affecting over 160,000 individuals, including children and women. He criticized the lack of moral responsibility shown by these actions and called for international accountability.
Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC's unwavering support for Palestine, advocating for an end to Israeli occupation. He emphasized establishing an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, aligning with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The secretary general outlined the GCC's dedication to enhancing human rights through unified systems and principles. Member states are continuously developing legislative frameworks rooted in human values and religious teachings, adhering to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"We adopt the principle of the right to development as a fundamental concept for sustainability," he stated. The GCC collaborates with UN mechanisms while respecting diverse human-rights concepts across different cultures.
Addressing Global Challenges
Albudaiwi expressed concern over rising Islamophobia and hate speech, urging global efforts to counter these issues. He advocated for fostering a culture of tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence worldwide.
He also highlighted regional conflicts as primary causes of human suffering, leading to severe violations of dignity and rights. The GCC remains committed to addressing these issues through diplomatic means.
Support for Humanitarian Efforts
The secretary general praised humanitarian workers' vital role but expressed concern over their safety in conflict zones. He called for their protection under international law and accountability measures against violations committed against them.
Albudaiwi underscored support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). He urged global backing to ensure UNRWA's continued provision of essential services crucial for regional stability and human-rights protection.
The GCC's focus remains on promoting peace, security, and human rights through mediation and collaboration with international bodies. Albudaiwi's remarks reflect a commitment to addressing global challenges while supporting vulnerable communities like Palestinian refugees.
