GCC Secretary-General Highlights Significant Achievements In Transportation And Communications Integration
The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Albudaiwi, emphasised that the progress in transportation and communications within the Gulf region highlights the integration among GCC countries. This development is attributed to the strategic policies implemented since the council's formation. Albudaiwi made these remarks during the 27th GCC Ministerial Committee of Transport and Communications meeting in Kuwait City.
Albudaiwi expressed gratitude to Kuwait's Amir, Shaikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, for hosting the meeting and supporting GCC initiatives. He acknowledged the commitment of GCC leaders to joint actions across various sectors. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Noura Mohammed Al Mashaan, Kuwait's Minister of Public Works, with participation from ministers and committee members from GCC states.

Article 23 of the Economic Agreement mandates that member states align their aviation and air transport strategies. It also calls for developing land and sea transport systems to ease movement for citizens and goods, thereby achieving economies of scale. This directive was highlighted by Albudaiwi as a foundation for ongoing integration efforts among member states.
During his address, Albudaiwi noted that the Supreme Council's 45th session in December 2024 stressed completing regulatory procedures for connecting GCC states through a railway project. This project is seen as crucial for enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.
The GCC states have made significant strides in logistics performance, surpassing global averages in 2023 according to the World Bank. Over 5,700 Gulf standard specifications and technical regulations have been issued for road construction within member states as of 2024. These advancements position GCC markets favourably for logistics providers and transport companies.
The region boasts over 25 main seaports and more than 23 international airports. The establishment of the Unified Maritime Operations Centre aims to protect regional waters, ensuring maritime navigation freedom while providing security and stability in the area.
Future Aspirations
Albudaiwi stated that while significant achievements have been made, there is a push towards deeper integration among member states. "This aligns with the aspirations and ambitions of GCC citizens, which surpass those accomplishments, and challenge us to realize these hopes," he said. The focus remains on enhancing gains achieved thus far.
The secretary-general highlighted that these developments affirm the GCC's influential role at both regional and international levels. The growing importance of the region in steering global economic trends is evident through its strategic initiatives in transportation and logistics.
The ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to advancing infrastructure and connectivity within the Gulf region. These initiatives are designed to meet both current needs and future aspirations of GCC citizens, fostering a more integrated economic landscape across member states.
