Gaza Humanitarian Response Faces Total Collapse Without Immediate Aid Resumption, Says Red Cross

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued a stark warning about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. After two months of restricted aid, the situation is nearing a critical point. The ICRC highlighted that without resuming aid deliveries, essential programmes providing food, medicine, and life-saving supplies will be severely impacted.

Pascal Hundt, ICRC Deputy Director of Operations, expressed grave concerns about the escalating crisis. "Civilians in Gaza are facing an overwhelming daily struggle to survive the dangers of hostilities, cope with relentless displacement, and endure the consequences of being deprived of urgent humanitarian assistance," he stated. The ICRC urged immediate action to prevent further deterioration.

The organisation emphasised Israel's responsibility under international humanitarian law to meet the basic needs of civilians under its control. The ongoing blockade threatens vital services like common kitchens, which provide many with their only daily meal. If restrictions persist, these services may cease within weeks.

The ICRC also raised alarms about its field hospital in Gaza. Supplies are dwindling rapidly, with some medicines already depleted. Repeated attacks have further strained healthcare facilities and personnel. The statement underscored that medical staff and infrastructure must be protected at all times according to international law.

"International humanitarian law is clear: medical personnel and facilities must be respected and protected in all circumstances," the ICRC stressed. It called for allowing aid into Gaza, releasing hostages, and ensuring civilian protection as essential steps to address the crisis.

The ICRC warned that without swift intervention, Gaza risks descending into chaos beyond what humanitarian efforts can manage. The urgency for action is paramount to prevent further suffering among the civilian population.
