GACA Partners With Lilium To Boost Saudi Arabia's Advanced Air Mobility

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has entered into a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) with Lilium GmbH, a German company known for its vertical take-off and landing aircraft (VOTL). This agreement aims to develop the regulatory framework for advanced air mobility in Saudi Arabia. The signing occurred during GACA's participation in the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, held from 22 to 26 July at Farnborough Airport in the UK.

This MoC strengthens GACA's collaboration with international firms to promote advanced air mobility applications within Saudi Arabia. It aligns with GACA's ongoing efforts to create regulations that foster the growth of this mobility type while ensuring passenger safety and security. Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Duailej, President of GACA, emphasised that the memorandum signifies GACA's dedication to supporting innovative and sustainable air mobility solutions, aligning with the National Aviation Strategy and Vision 2030 objectives.

GACA-Lilium Elevate Saudi Air Mobility

Al-Duailej stated that working with leading global manufacturers is crucial for establishing a robust regulatory framework. This framework will ensure the safe and efficient operation of VOTL aircraft and other advanced air mobility applications. He added that this cooperation is part of the sector's strategy to support sustainability and environmental preservation initiatives.

Strategic Purchase Agreement

In July, "Saudi Group" signed an agreement with Lilium to purchase 100 electric aircraft. This deal includes 50 confirmed aircraft and an option for an additional 50. The new aircraft will offer unprecedented solutions for connecting pilgrims to Makkah during Hajj and Umrah seasons. They will also facilitate quick access for visitors attending sports events, entertainment venues, tourist sites, and mega projects linked to Vision 2030.

The MoC reflects GACA's commitment to enabling innovative air mobility solutions in line with Vision 2030 goals. By collaborating with major international manufacturers, GACA aims to establish a strong regulatory framework that ensures safe and efficient operations of VOTL aircraft. This initiative supports sustainability and environmental preservation while enhancing connectivity within Saudi Arabia.
