G7 Foreign Ministers Discuss Global Security And Humanitarian Aid During UN General Assembly

The G7 Foreign Ministers and the European Union's High Representative have released a joint statement during the UN General Assembly. This statement highlights significant global issues. They expressed support for creating a UN Support Office in Haiti. This office aims to transform the Multinational Security Support Mission into a new force. Its goals include dismantling gangs, securing vital infrastructure, and restoring security in collaboration with Haitian authorities.

Regarding the Middle East, the ministers emphasised the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Gaza to ease civilian suffering. They also called for the release of all hostages and urged a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The ministers showed willingness to work with Arab partners on reconstruction efforts and advancing lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

G7 Ministers Address Global Security Issues

The statement addressed Iran, urging Tehran to fully comply with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It encouraged Iran to resume full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Additionally, they called for direct talks with the United States to achieve a robust, durable, and comprehensive nuclear agreement.

In Asia, the ministers highlighted the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region based on rule of law principles. They opposed any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo by force or coercion, particularly in areas like the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait. The statement also called for North Korea's denuclearisation.

The G7 marked the UN’s 80th anniversary by stressing necessary reforms for enhancing its effectiveness in tackling global challenges. These reforms aim at ensuring that the organisation can better address international issues as they arise.
