G42 And Microsoft Establish Responsible AI Foundation To Promote Ethical Standards In The Middle East
G42 and Microsoft have introduced the Responsible AI Foundation, marking a pioneering effort in the Middle East. Partnering with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), this initiative seeks to promote ethical AI practices across the Middle East and Global South. Inception, a G42 entity, will lead the programme to further this mission.
The foundation will focus on two main areas: responsible AI research and implementation. The research aspect aims to advance both technical and ethical components of AI through innovative studies. This includes creating methodologies for AI safety, techniques to reduce bias, and tools for explainability. Collaboration with global and regional institutions will help establish new standards for fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI.

The implementation side involves developing frameworks that ensure ethical AI development and deployment while considering cultural diversity. This includes designing risk assessment models, forming external ethics boards, creating technical audit tools, and establishing adaptable governance guidelines tailored to regional needs. These efforts aim to make AI adoption both responsible and inclusive.
Microsoft has also announced the expansion of its AI for Good Lab to Abu Dhabi in collaboration with G42. This lab will serve as a regional hub working with NGOs and governmental organisations to tackle societal challenges using AI. The focus will be on projects within the Middle East and Global South.
The first researchers at the Abu Dhabi hub are set to begin their work in March this year. Their efforts will concentrate on leveraging AI to address pressing issues in society, particularly within the region. By establishing these initiatives, G42 and the UAE are positioning themselves as leaders in responsible AI development globally.
The Responsible AI Foundation's launch signifies a commitment to advancing ethical standards in artificial intelligence. With support from MBZUAI, it aims to foster collaboration among research institutions worldwide. This initiative is expected to set new benchmarks for fairness and accountability in AI practices.
Through these efforts, G42 and Microsoft are not only promoting responsible AI but also enhancing their roles as key players in the global tech landscape. The establishment of these centres underscores their dedication to ensuring that technological advancements align with ethical principles.
