Dubai Future Foundation Explores Alternative Proteins For Enhanced Food Security

The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has unveiled a report underscoring the significance of enhancing food security through scientific and research advancements in alternative protein. The report, titled "Mission Possible Food Security – A Role for Alternative Proteins," is part of DFF's ongoing efforts to prepare key sectors for future challenges and opportunities. This initiative bolsters Dubai’s standing as a global leader in future preparedness.

The report's release was announced at an event hosted by the Dubai Future Academy, in collaboration with Dubai Municipality and "Food Tech Valley." The event featured experts, scientists, researchers, specialists, and startups engaged in future food production and innovative technologies. Participants discussed technology-based solutions as sustainable alternatives and sampled foods produced using advanced techniques.

Exploring Alternative Proteins

The report highlights the critical role of stakeholders in the food value chain, including government bodies, regulatory agencies, companies, and consumers. It stresses the need for innovation in food production systems to ensure food security. With an estimated requirement of 374 million tonnes of meat by 2030 due to rising incomes and population growth, the production of cultured meat is projected to reach 2.1 million metric tonnes by 2030, with a market value of US$25 billion.

Plant-Based Meat

The report notes a significant increase in the market share of plant-based meat within the food industry. This sector is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 20.6 percent by 2030. Plant-based meats, derived from plants or fungi to mimic animal meat's taste and texture, have become widely recognised alternatives to traditional meat.

Statements from DFF Leadership

Abdulaziz Al Jaziri, Deputy CEO of DFF, stated, "The aim of launching this knowledge report is to initiate effective dialogues about developing and utilising innovative technologies in food production and regulation. This will help leverage promising opportunities in this sector and address its challenges, such as environmental impact and carbon footprint." He added that the report supports resource efficiency and establishes sustainability practices within future foods production, aligning with the UAE's national food security strategies.

Key Priorities

The report addresses several priorities: supporting emerging projects in food innovation and modern agricultural technology; utilising artificial intelligence and bioengineering applications; developing new regulations and governance principles; updating investment conditions; health and safety standards; and environmental considerations. These measures aim to ensure proper future food production.

Investment Insights

According to the report, nearly 57 percent of companies focused on fermentation for alternative proteins were founded in the past three years. Investment in this sector is estimated at around $5 billion between 2016 and 2022. The global precision fermentation industry generated revenues of $1.3 billion in 2021, with projections reaching $34.9 billion by 2031.

Recommendations

The report includes several recommendations for sustainable growth in the alternative protein sector. It emphasises meeting all health and safety standards meticulously for new food products. It also calls for establishing appropriate legislation and clear guidelines governing all stages of commercialisation. Increasing investments and funding to support large-scale production using sustainable technologies like renewable energy is crucial. Engaging with consumers ensures that products are culturally appropriate and meet community needs worldwide.
